Price is rarely anything more than an objection. It isn't a barrier. For those of you with the salesman hat know immediately that a sale cannot be made without overcoming an objection. No sale will occur without first hearing an objection. A well trained saleman knows that an objection means that you are that closer to the YES. Objections are important otherwise the person isn't really interested and there certainly isn't any interaction between the buyer and seller - which isn't good.

What I meant, wasn't to say Joe Blow doesn't go into CompUSA with enough cash to buy any distro. What I am saying is if your product doesn't have a name advantage, it must have something. For example, if I go to the supermarket, I expect to pay less for the lesser-known and store brands than for say Coca-Cola or Pepsi. I happen to know several very good cheap soda brands, but even if they are every bit of the quality of Coke, they will cost less. So, point one is, a lesser known is expected to be cheaper (in most cases) than a well known name (RedHat). Even a knowledgeable techie I know, who writes for a local Computer Newspaper connected Linux with RedHat. Okay, if by nothing else but sales, I think we can say RedHat is the "brand name" version of Linux. Now, back to Joe at CompUSA. As I have said before if he sees SuSE 7.0 Professional and RedHat Professional for the same price, most likely he isn't going to say "Let's see how many packages are in each" (he doesn't probably even understand RPMs unless they are in his car) - he is going to say I'll go with RedHat, they're both the professional version and the same price. However, if Joe had been confronted with SuSE Linux 6.4 (which he realizes only comes in one flavor, and thus assumes it must be better than a "personal" version) for 20 bucks and see RedHat Pro for $60, he might consider going with the cheaper one. Can he afford either? Yes. However, cost can still persuade people, even if they can afford both options easily.
