Re: [S.u.S.E. Linux] Masquerading as an x-server?
So, does this mean that if I get Masquerading working, I can't use X-Windows at the same time? I use KDE at this point in time. Paul, You can still use X-windows. The problem is when you attempt to display a window that is comming in over the masquerading port and going to a box other than the one that is physically connected to the outside world. Here is my situation: I have a system called lakshmana, this system has an ethernet connection to baraba. diald is running on baraba and connecting to earthlink-sprint. I can telnet into my sparc at work just fine over the dial up connection. When I try to setenv DISPLAY ${REMOTEHOST}:0.0 and then run kedit on the sparc, the kedit window goes to baraba. I would like it to go to lakshmana, but I don't know how to accomplish this. Steve Paul Brun wrote:

Hi, The way to get X connections over the router which runs IP-masquerading is to use ssh. There is an rpm package in the suse distribution which you just have to install. Then you can run ssh connections trough the router and the X connection gets forwarded too. The sshd has to run on the machine you try to connect to, but not neccessarily on the router, because it just transfers the IP packages. Most unix machines should have sshd running anyway. ssh furthermore encrypts your connection, very nice for data security and sending your password over the net. We have it running here under suse 5.2 and it works just fine. Hope that helps... Richard --- Department of Physics Washington University in St. Louis On Tue, 11 Aug 1998, Steven T. Hatton wrote:

Never tried that, because the X-Server for Windows NT doesn't support ssh, even though there is an ssh port for WIndows NT. Useally I always use ssh, for x-session between my linux machines. They are easy and safe. Iw ill try if I can patch my x-server for Windows NT to use sshd. (Just 4 the fun of it). But for Linux machines behind maswuarding it works. Thanx for the tip man.
