Ok, I know I'll hear about this, but I have no clue how to use vi. I am trying to add me "jon" to the sudoers file so I can run sudo without the root password. I think I know how to put it in the file: jon ALL=/sbin/mount But how do I save the file?? I am trying to use samba and mount my USB card reader without having to use root password. Thanks for any help.
As root, "export EDITOR=emacs". Better yet, put this in you .bashrc
file. Many system utilities use this environment variable.
Then run visudo.

i enter insert mode (write your text) ESC leave insert mode ZZ save and exit If this is too terse or cryptic, run the program "vimtutor". It will teach you the basics of vi in 40 minutes. lördagen den 20 april 2002 21.25 skrev Jon Doe:

While I don't want to start a religious battle since I am an EMACS person: IMHO, every Unix or Linux person who acts as a system admin should have a basic working knowledge of the VI editor as it is the standard Unix editor (and has been since included in Unix System 3). It was written by Bill Joy (and his team at Berkeley). Bill is still at Sun. On 20 Apr 2002 at 15:25, Jon Doe wrote:

A very quick tutorial: Two modes - 'command' and 'insert'. hitting 'i' in command mode will take you to insert mode, where you can add text. You cannot delete text in insert mode, except for the text you've just inserted (and except in particular enhanced versions of vi. hitting 'Esc' in insert mode will take you to command mode. In command mode: 'x' will delete the character under the cursor 'dd' will delete the current line ':x' will save and exit ':q!' will exit without saving -- David Smith | Tel: +44 (0)1454 462380 Home: +44 (0)1454 616963 STMicroelectronics | Fax: +44 (0)1454 617910 Mobile: +44 (0)7932 642724 1000 Aztec West | TINA: 065 2380 Almondsbury | Work Email: Dave.Smith@st.com BRISTOL, BS32 4SQ | Home Email: David.Smith@ds-electronics.co.uk
