From www.rubberturnip.org.uk/planetsuse :
"SuSE LINUX 9.1, available in April 2004, and the next generation of SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server, available in summer 2004, will include an enhanced version of X11 based on a XFree86 version prior to the license change. "For the future, we are exploring different options, e.g. X.org and freedesktop.org, to establish a reliable alternative that lets our customers benefit from future enhancements in Linux desktop infrastructure technology." -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Personally I want to see the code from freedesktop.org make it in as a
replacement for XFree86. It has some _seriously_ nice features and
eye-candy built in.
XFree86 shot themselves in the feet with a BFG9000 when they modified
the licence the way they did. Kudos to SuSE for exploring alternatives
in light of the current situation.

While I don't enjoy their choice to keep YaST not OSI compliant I definitively enjoy their position on XFree86 and I really think SuSE has the right people to manage this decision in the most innovative and best way for the user. We all have to come to compromises. I'm just hoping for better and better compromises. I wouldn't use SUSE if I didn't think they weren't producing an enough valid product and they weren't among the best contributor to the Free Software capital. Nevertheless I'm always looking for better compromises. Sooner or later they will feel competition closer till the license will make the difference between choosing SUSE or distro X.

Where did you get this information? Do you have a link to a page on the
SuSE site? I looked on PlanetSuSE but could not find anything...

I think that article has now dropped of the bottom of Planet SuSE, but checking the RSS feed of p.SuSE News, the article is http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14511, and the April 2004 reference is a quote from an email from SuSE's PR department. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 9.0).
