I am talking to a recent SuSE convert form M$ products. I mentioned apt-get, but now cannot point him to the rpms. I don't think he is ready for the configure>>make>>make install stuff yet. Where can I find the rpms for apt-get apt-get-devel aptlibs and synaptic? Ed Harrison

Actually, that gets you to the HOW-TO, but I found them at ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/apt4rpm/suse/extra/8.2/ Ed Harrison

I have some reservations about Apt-Get for SuSE, maybe you can put them to rest. As I understand it, Aprt-Get is not the prescribed method of package management, YaST is. SuSE have some responsibility for making sure the repositories that YaST looks to are in good order. Can the same be said for the Apt-Get for SuSE repositories? As I see it, Apt-Get is a project. If I choose to go with Apt-Get, how confident can I be that these repositories will still be maintained next week or at some other time in the future. This uncertainty has put me off investigating Apt-Get fully, maybe without reason. You tell me. Also, do the Apt-Get repositories cover as broad a range of packages as YaST? -- Colin

Apt uses the same rpm's that you can get with YOU, it's just another vehicle to get them. It should still exist next week and long into the future. Even if it does go away it shouldn't be a problem because you can use YOU or fou something or other without any problems. In fact many people use a combination of the three.

Even though many people have used the apt-get upgrade feature without any problems i tend to stay away from that because of past horror stories, and use apt to upgrade selected packages and let it worry about the dependencies.
Also, do the Apt-Get repositories cover as broad a range of packages as YaST?
They have a much broader variety of packages. There are packman's rpm's, James' gnome packages from usr-local-bin, some suser packages(suse users), also some beta versions of fixes brought to us by suse-people.
-- Colin For more info search the archives and look for posts from Richard Bos. I know he has explained this many times, and done a far better job than i could ever do. -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro

To give you a number for suse-8.2 the apt repository provides 300+ rpms that are not provided by SuSE. Further more many newer rpm versions _can_ be obtained. It's up to you to decide wether you want to include the apt components that provide the newer pkgs. If you want to stay safe just use the components base, update/security. There is nothing to add to Franklin's explanation :) -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless
