Cups ./configure and make for SuSE 7.3 Pro and Epson Stylus C80.
Where are all of the list members that recommended a printer to you when you need them? I have asked about the following and not received a reply: 1) If you have the newest source for CUPS, Gimp-Print and Ghostscript, which do you install first? 2) I haven't found anything in the install.txt or readme.txt files for CUPS that mentions a special procedure to compile cups for gimp-print. As was pointed out by Anthony on the list. Maybe I am reading this wrong, is it cups that should be compiled in a special way for gimp-print or vice versa? the original posting included the following: "The only issue is that you have to convince it to compile the cups drivers for gimpprint when you compile that." 3) In lieu of any advice on these issues, I have tried to .7configure and make CUPS on my own. Come on guys, I am a newbie, I still have to use an old e-mail for reference to figure out how to compile a program, but as soon as I decide on an Epson C80 printer, than all of the advice dries up. From postings on the list, it seems like there are a number of other people out there that are not newbies and haven't been successful with this process. Assistance please! 1) If you have the newest source for CUPS, Gimp-Print and Ghostscript, which do you install first?
I don't recall that it makes much difference which order you use to compile CUPS and gimp-print. You need to compile gimp-print before ghostscript because gimp-print provides some extra functionality for ghostscript. However, I would recommend that you don't compile ghostscript because: (a) it's much more difficult: you have to put together source code from several different locations to get the full ghostscript, then you have to make careful adjustments by hand to the configuration, and when you've installed the new version, you probably have to make yet more adjustments to get it to work; (b) the version of ghostscript that comes with 7.3 will work with the new version of gimp-print anyway; (c) even if you install ghostscript correctly, you probably won't notice any difference - I certainly didn't.
2) I haven't found anything in the install.txt or readme.txt files for CUPS that mentions a special procedure to compile cups for gimp-print. As was pointed out by Anthony on the list. Maybe I am reading this wrong, is it cups that should be compiled in a special way for gimp-print or vice versa? the original posting included the following:
CUPS seems to install without any problems on SuSE 7.3, though you may not see any difference in the latest version.
3) In lieu of any advice on these issues, I have tried to .7configure and make CUPS on my own.
Can anyone tell me if CUPS configured properly?
These are warnings rather than errors and very common in compiling C code. The compilation looks correct. == Here are my notes for isnatlling gimp-print. You don't need either ghostscript or CUPS to get this to work. == Download gimp-print-4.2.0 from http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net Create a symbolic link to /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/gimp-print-4.2.0.tar.gz Use konqueror (link) or # ln -s gimp-print-4.2.0.tar.gz /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/gimp-print-4.2.0.tar.gz Uncompress: # cd /usr/src/packages/SOURCES # tar zxvf gimp-print-4.2.0.tar.gz Remove link (no longer needed) # rm gimp-print-4.2.0.tar.gz Change directory and compile # cd gimp-print-4.2.0 Read README. # CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686" ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-cups # make # su # make install # exit Notes: Only use -march=i686 if you are sure you have a 686 (PII or celeron or better) processor. AMD users can use -march=k6. Pentium (original) users can use -march=i585. If you don't have gimp installed, you may want to use --without-gimp after --with-cups. You don't need to tell gimp-print whether or not you intend to recompile ghostscript. The --prefix=/usr puts gimp-print in the /usr directory, which is more sensible with a SuSE installation. == JDL

The compilation looks correct. Good, I have now done a make install. That should be it for CUPS, as far as the install process is concerned, correct? - == - Here are my notes for isnatlling gimp-print. What should I look for with regards to potential error messages with the ./configure and make commands? - # make - # su - # make install - # exit Now, I would assume that I need to go into YAST 2 or Webmin, which I also have and configure the printer to my parallel port? - Notes: - Only use -march=i686 if you are sure you have a 686 (PII or celeron or - better) - processor. Many thanks for the time and advice so far. Cheers, Brian

It seems (to my understanding) that an Athlon 1800 XP COULD fall under the category of an i686 machine. If this is actually the case, then "-march=i686" would be OK. Does anyone know if this is a correct assumption? Cheers, Brian
