Hello, I have a 19" system here which I put together myself. Network SK-9821 Gigabit with copper from Syskonnect SuSE Kernel 2.4.19
My problem is that I can not get the SK-9821 Gigabit card to work. I can see and configure the card in YaST. But I keep getting the following error when booting: "ifup: Could not get valid interface name:> Skipped"
The card is configured as eth0. I can not ping the system, it tells me the network can not be reached.
Can you do an 'ifconfig eth0 up'? Yes it tells me "eth0: unknown interface: No such device"
When I configured the on-board Pro/100 it worked just fine. I have tried reinstalling SuSE, but it did not help. /var/log/messages shows nothing on network. /var/log/warn shows the "ifup.." error, but that is all. I had talked to Syskonnect, they told me there were no plans on a driver for this kernel.
Not here: http://www.syskonnect.com/syskonnect/support/driver/d0102_driver.html ? No, I have tried these drivers though and had no luck. After upgradeing a package or two thu yast I suddenly found my /etc/modules.conf filehad the eth0 line set to "off" instead of the module name that had been there previously. Luckily I had a backup and was able to restore. While the eth0 was set to off it exhibited the same symptoms reported here. -- _________________________________________________ John Andersen / Juneau Alaska

Er.... ah... um.......... "suddenly found"?? You mean: a) you were sitting there watching for it to change? or b) you suddenly had a problem, but you knew where to look for a likely cause? One of those options would be scary to many of us. :-) /kevin
Hello I had a very similar problem which I posted here before (BTW, no one answered). My onboard network interface was not seen by ifup, ifconfig etc. YaST however was very happy to configure it. After going through every single *.conf file and the entire /etc subdirectory I determined that the driver was the issue. I eventually found the source code for the ethernet chip that the motherboard used , recompiled it and did an insmod. The new kernel module solved the problem. My other option was to buy a PCI ethernet card. I don't know if the driver source is available for your board. Sorry I cannot help you. Regards John Andersen wrote:
