Proliant 2500 install question
Hello list. Has anybody had any success installing SuSE 8.1 Professional linux on a Compaq Proliant 2500 server? The install process hangs at RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0. If so, can you provide some advice. Many thanks in advance. Mark -- Hey dad, I smell clowns. --Sydney Lucier Black holes are where God divided by zero. Silly God! --Dale L. You have to try several ways to install it:
1. From the original CD shipped with the distribution
2. FTP install (and use the ISO from the ftp updates of SuSE 8.1 -
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/update/8.1/disks/bootcd.iso )
P.S. I suppose you DO have more than 128Mb RAM on that machine, do you?
If both fails, then contact your SuSE dealer...
Regards,
Radu

Thanks for the information. I have tried using the Linux 8.1 professional CD Set Install CD #1 and using CD #2 gets me a bit further. It gets beyond the RAMDISK hang and prompts for CD #1. After inserting CD 1 I am told that I do not have enough memory to run YaST and in order to continue I have to activate some swap space. I attempt to do so but get an error activating swap space. I have 328MB of ram installed. I guess I am lost but will not give up trying. It seems that it does not recognize the SCSI controller and the amount of RAM installed. Radu Voicu wrote:

I think you shoud try one of the following: 1) Pass the correct RAM amount on the boot prompt: mem=302M -- or -- 2) Try the manual installation: a) boot with the 2cd CD b) on the boot screen, select "text" mode and type "manual" and press enter (remember to type "manual mem=302M") One of these should get you much further in the installation process :-) --jq

Hello. Does it have both CPU's installed ? If so, you might want to make sure to use the disableapic boot switch. Also, what OS is it set for in the BIOS ? I have seen problems in the past when the BIOS was set to Windows2000 (even while trying to install W2K) and the problems went away as soon as the BIOS was set to NT. Not sure what changes it makes, but it went from unusable to rock solid at the flick of a switch. Do you have a RAID card in it ? If not, you can find Smart 2/P (4MB cache) and Smart 2DH (16MB cache) array controllers very cheaply (around $20) out on Ebay. These cards may not be the best in the world, but they are appropriate to this level of hardware, and great value for the price. Also make sure that you have updated all the firmware as far as it will go. This includes BIOS, array controllers, tape drives and even the hard drives, depending on their vintage. Look for the relevant ROMPaq on the Compaq/HP website. Good luck, Stuart. -----Original Message----- From: Jyry Kuukkanen [mailto:jyry@neutech.fi] Sent: Wednesday, April 09, 2003 06:20 To: Mark Lucier Cc: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] Proliant 2500 install question On Mon, 7 Apr 2003, Mark Lucier wrote: the
