Hi everyone. Can we use smtp (eg under kmail) to send mail to machines on our lan? Like can w98 Samba clients get it with outlook express? Yast seems to say yes and we have a MX entry in our zone files. We can send from the server without errors but cannot recieve on the clients nor can they mail the server. Any advice anyone. Thanks, Steve.
in short, yes you can do that. you need to setup popper or imapd in /etc/inetd.conf and make sure sendmail is running. also, you need an entry in /etc/mail/sendmail.cw (or local-host-names if you installed sendmail from source) for the domains you wish to recieve mail. each user who is to recieve mail will need an account on the server and you need to add your lan ip range to /etc/hosts.allow for sendmail, popper and/or imapd with the following syntax popper: 192.168.1. : ALLOW sendmail: ALL: ALLOW the version of sendmail that is on the suse disks (since 7.1) is compiled with tcp-wrapper support. if you get the source and compile it, you can choose to leave this out. you will also need to add your lan ip range to the file /etc/mail/access with the follwoing syntax 192.168.1 RELAY this will relay mail from any ip 192.168.1.0-255. (note the absence of the trailing period that was required in the /etc/hosts.allow file) after editing the file, do makemap hash /etc/mail/access < /etc/mail/access you will have to restart inetd after making changes to the /etc/hosts.allow file and you will only need to restart sendmail after changing the /etc/mail/sendmail.cw file you can restart both with a kill -HUP pidofprocess or just do a /etc/init.d/service restart On Sat, 1 Dec 2001, scc wrote:
