Hello :-) I like to do small trips, using a GPS (Garmin, for now) The dedicated software (Map Source) is mandatory to have the maps, and I have it, but I find it really ugly, not to add it works only under windows, of course. Do you know any free (as freedom) sotware, preferably working with openSUSE that allows editing tracks and dl/ul to/from a GPS through USB? thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-eic8MSSfM -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In YAST software management, search for 'gps'. One popular app is gpsdrive. I have seen others, but I do not recall their names. gpsdrive may be enough to get you started. It is possible that your USB GPS looks like a serial port. That is, it uses a device named something like /etc/ttyUSB0. You can see this when you plug it in. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. It is like talking about large city with all constructions finished. Not impossible, but very unlikely. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I answered this before lunch. Too low blood sugar. Of course I meant /dev/ttyUSB0 -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. Already done. I wonder why these are not in the Community Repository list. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. qlandkarte and viking, as already said by other people, are what you're
looking for.
You might also want to look at openstreetmap.org, a project to make a
free map of the whole world, and which supplies tools for making GARMIN
maps from their data. I build regularly European countries maps at:
http://rodrigo.gnome-db.org/gps/garmin
just have a look, depending on where you are, the maps should be quite
good. And if they are not, you can just help completing the map :-)
