HI all, In the past few days I have been having problems with KDE. I've got them more or less fixed. But one is driving me crazy! When I click on the bar at the bottom to bring up a new window KDE closes all other windows. I don't want it to do this. For example when I am working on a web site and need to use Kcalc the web site window closes. What I want is the web window open with the Kcalc window open too. How do I tell KDE to not close windows? Thanks, JIM -- Check out my stamp & postcard collection! Yankee GO HOME! Hi Jim, I don't really understand the problem. Do you mean when you click on the taskbar to switch apps? Which version of KDE is it? I do like the web site. Thanks for the link. Ok, for example, I have right now a window open writing this email to you. But if I want to add 2+2 (lets keep it simple :) ) and I click on the Kcalc button at the task bar, the email window is gone and the only window then open is the Kcalc window. To get the email back I must click on it in the task bar then the Kcalc window is gone. In other words I can only have one window open at a time. I'm using the KDE that came with 12.1. Did you enable the netbook workspace instead of desktop? That maximises all windows by default, which could cause what you see (although you don't write that the windows are maximised). Mmm not sure, how do I do that? I'll be honest I've been changing the settings so much trying to get my icons back (which I did) that I'm not sure what settings I have anymore. :( Thanks, JIM -- Check out my stamp & postcard collection! System Settings->Workspace Behaviour->Workspace, change to Desktop. Glad you got your icons back. Did you notice which change restored them? there's another setting (systemsettings) that can lead to windows opening maximized by default: systemsettings -> window behavior -> window behavior (tab on the left) -> placement one of the options there is "maximized," which you probably don't want. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah, that could do it - if James' problem involves maximized windows. That is bad layout in that KCM, it looks like the new window placement policy is part of the tabbing group. would be interesting to know if that's the case, if his (james') windows open maximized, and if the other windows show up when that window's maximization is switched off. if not, something really weird is going on, since i haven't seen or heard of a situation where all other windows are (or appear to be) minimized when another one gets the focus. only other situation i can think of is that he has those windows open on different desktops, and his task manager is set to display app.s from all desktops. then, when clicking on the task manager entry for an application on another desktop, the display would switch to that desktop, and the previously open window 'disappears.' -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

It sounds like you HIDING windows, not closing them. Closing them (menu -> close or F4) means the content goes away. Its likely that when you say "I click on the bar at the bottom to bring up a new window" you are actually switching between virtual desktops There are many setting that can cause windows to be hidden when a new one opens. -- It seems to work fairly well but composing e-mail on a phone keypad is akin to trigonometry in binary. -- ajtr2 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
