Kernel upgrade help
Please point me in the right direction for information on kernel change from SuSE 2.4.19-athlon to kernel.org 2.4.9. I need at least 2.4.3 for the sake of my usb scanner, and felt that I might as well go all the way (the thought of 2.5.x scares me. (well, actually heading outside of the realm of a yast update scares me, but...)). Am I better off compiling from the source, or...? Why? I am able to get a RedHat 2.4.7-athlon.rpm. Would I be better off using this? What will this do to my SuSE 8.1 system by going outside SuSE for the kernel? I really fear doing this, so I need detailed information and step-by-step directions. I don't want to toast my system. Bernd
Hi, Nothing much all works fine...I installed a vanilla kernel from kernel.org which was an older version, after some tinkerings in the modules.conf and the make menuconfig I got it working .. please take a copy of your /boot before attempting to do anything and keep it at a safe place not in the boot partition somewhere in /data or something else.. as in case something goes wrong you boot into rescuse mode.. and untar the working boot.tar after you mount the correct partition.. if it gets to that then let me know I will tell you how I got out of the mess I got into.. I don't want to toast my system. Well, Bernd ..any 2.4 kernel before 2.4.10 had a root exploit I believe and it would be inadvisable to use these. I'm not sure why your wanting to go so far back in version numbers for the kernel. The .19 kernel should have support for the devices that were supported with 2.4.3 or 2.4.9. If you need to compile a module for your kernel it's best to compile it against the new release of the 2.4.19 kernel because it's been patched for another root exploit that was announced about a week ago. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I'll tell you what you should see.

Boy, am I ever glad I wrote! My mind has been severly fried lately from little sleep, although that's no excuse for utter stupidity! I was looking at the first digit (2.4.(1)9 and seeing 2.4.1-9!?!?!). Ben, thanks so very much for pointing out the "now" very obvious!! Thanks, Bernd
