Hi. I', running the SuSE 8.0. I know that the subject "Installing Yast1" has been mentioned here on the list. Also I have gone thru the archive, but could not find how to install Yast1 from the SuSE 7.3. I have a dvd here, and can install from there, but of course also from the cd's. Can anybody help me how to install Yast1 ?? Thanks in advance. -- Med venlig hilsen - Best regards - Vy 73 de oz4kk Erik Jakobsen - erik@urbakken.dk SuSE 8.0.

Nope, we won't do it. For us, YaST1 is dead.
Putting YaST1 in update would mean we would have to adapt it to SuSE Linux 8.0 which we won't do.

Just a quick question on this subject. Is yast2 now usable in console mode? A by usable I mean that, not just executable! imho Its ok'ish. Its irritating to have to keep pressing Alt-L to launch options when you think that <Enter> would be the correct key. But its ok. Lets face it Yast1 was not pretty, but it was very good function wise and was pretty intuitive. Yast2 has some more catching up to do. dids

Tom
[snip...] I've used it in text mode, and I haven't found any problems. It was perfectly usable. alan

I used YaST1 to install on my Compaq Presario 1620 with 80M of memory
under 7.1 because YaST2 required more memory.
If YaST2 won't install with those memory constraints, then my laptop is
dead as a SuSE laptop.

The documentation states that YaST2's GUI install requires 64M of ram. I really don't see any reason why you laptop would become useless. Give the install a go..it should work with 80M of ram.

It will work surely. I have been installing it on my old laptop which had just 64mbyte of ram. The SuSEconfig part was not fast, but not any slower than ever. And yast2 went pretty good. Praise
Hi Michael, first of all, I *do* read the list, so there really is no need to send me an additional private mail. * Michael E. Jaggers (mej@mindspring.com) [20020506 07:35]:

Memory requirements have been lowered since then and YaST2 will run
with 64 MiB and up.

Phillip, I really think SuSE are shooting themselves in their collective feet with this attitude.... How about allowing a select group to modify and maintain it ? Any takers ?

What's stopping you? You won't be able to sell your work, but you're perfectly able to put it up for download on an ftp server somewhere.
Any takers ?
Maintaining YaST1 as a system administration tool could be a lot of work. It shouldn't be that difficult to rip out the package maintenance functions to make a minimal rpm manager, but then again why bother; there are already several programs out there for this. But if people really wanted it it should be doable without too much work //Anders
Please, I do read the list so additional private mails aren't
necessary.

What restricts you? The sources are on the CDs/DVD and open for anyone. The only restriction is, that you can't use it in a commercial product of your own without approval from SuSE. So it *is* free for anybody to grab. I just very seriously doubt that anybody will actually work on those sources, provided that there is no support from SuSE. Philipp
