3D games, which video card?
I am looking to get a video card that will enable me to play those Loki games that require 3D accelerated rendering. I am currently running XF86 4.0.2. Any suggestion as to which video card to get? Thanks, Avi -- Avi Schwartz Get a Life, avi@CFFtechnologies.com Get Linux!
Well, I have had luck with nVidia cards..and the drivers keep getting better...although today when I was playing Soldier of Fortune..I quit the game and KDE2 was all kinds of screwed up colour wise..so I figured I would restart it..when I did X errored and would not start up. I had made a back up of my XF86Config file and a good thing to .. because I looked in /etc/X11/ and it was gone..as in NOT there. I still haven't figured out what could have deleted it. If this has happened to anyone else...please let me know what conclusions were come to. * Avi Schwartz (avi@CFFtechnologies.com) [010305 21:46]: =>I am looking to get a video card that will enable me to play those Loki =>games that require 3D accelerated rendering. Hi Ben, I think quite some people had that screwed up colour screen. Now that you say that your XF86 was gone, I was wondering, during my new install, if enabling glx could have wiped out the modules.conf file. As I mentionned before to the list I only had a tmp modules.conf,- file. After getting up sound and eth with yast2, the only items I found in the modules.conf file were the sound and eth setup things. Maybe you have a XF86Config,- tmp file. Could you please check. I reinstalled twice the 2 nvidia rpms and problems seem to have gone. Realy don't know why. Cheers, Filip. Le Mardi 6 Mars 2001 06:54, Ben Rosenberg a crit :

I'm using a 32MB Diamond Viper V770 (AGP) at home and 3D is awesome. I've been playing SOF and Heavy Gear 2 (well my son has been playing them more than me it seems...) and things look great. I've got probs with the Q3 demo though, no acceleration, but I'm getting burned out on Q3 anyway... I seem to recall someone here (Lenz praps?) mentioning 3D support was good with the Matrox G450 too. I've got a 32MB ATI Radeon, but I hear I'm going to have to wait for XFree 4.1 in order to get 3D acceleration on that one :( Good luck! It seems to be buzzing merrily along w/o problems .. NOW, anyone have any AweSome Screen Savers I could add to that box? I remember there *was* one called "Altered Saver" , but I'd be just as happy w/ any OpenGl one right now ( "pipes" and the "morph" thing, as well as the "starfield" ( Space ? ) Are pitiful examples. Made me feel they were making very wintel type moves.. we wont write any new drivers for that , no matter how teh os might evolve . so "get over it and buy our latest " This was the only feeling one could get when they wouldn't even bother to answer email posted AT their site! Mind you, the acrds were really superior to anything else at the time , but that was a looooong time ago. Blondely, j
