Synaptic & failure
Hi. I have made an upgrade today using Synaptic on my 8.2 system. After I forgot to run the 3 -4 lines, that I cannot remember what is now :-( But after a reboot, I'm receiving the following: kernel (hd0,5) /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 vga=0x317 hdd=ide-scsi hddlun=0 splash=silent splash=silent hdc=ide-scsi Error 15: File not found I can do failsafe start up. What can I do to get the 8.2 to carry on ?. /Erik.

I'm just guessing but i assume you updated your kernel, with a SuSE or mantel version. Have you run mk_initrd? SuSEconfig?ldconfig? Maybe have yast rewrite your bootloader. HTH -- Franklin Maurer Using SuSE 8.2 Pro
I'm just guessing but i assume you updated your kernel, with a SuSE or mantel version.
I'm not sure if it has, but there's some complaining around the Athlon kernel module, that cannot be found, I can see in the logfiles.
Have you run mk_initrd? SuSEconfig?ldconfig?
The first one cannot be executed, and the last 2 runs fine.
Maybe have yast rewrite your bootloader.
Maybe, and how to be aware of that ?. /Erik.

You could try to reinstall k_athlon from the cds as a last resort. What is the error? What kernel do you have installed? check with yast or kpackage or synaptic. Did you compile a kernel? or just upgrade with apt?

As root you did # mk_initrd and nothing happened? No messages? Here's the output of mine ... I forget which is the real command.

Yast2 > system >bootloader config > root password > there is an option for rereading configuration > then finish/ ok. But I doubt that is the problem most likely it has to do with the kernel. Ok, but how do I that ?.
What is the error?
I cannot remember, and could not as I wanted to copy the logfiles to my winxp partition, to be able to look at them. I was not able to mount /windows/C due to a vfat message.
What kernel do you have installed? check with yast or kpackage or synaptic. Did you compile a kernel? or just upgrade with apt?
As far as I remember it the verision you also have mentioned further down the lines. I'll try if I can do it as I can do a failsafe boot. No I did'nt compile the kernel, just as you say updated the system with Synaptic, and I'm at all not a clever Synaptic user -at the present- Then I would do a reboot, and encoutered the problems, maybe because I din't ran the SuSEconfig, ldconfig after the finish of the work of Synaptic.

But I'll give it a try, but have the same idea about it as you have. I use Grub here. Thanks so much for your infos Franklin.

fire up yast2. > software > install remove software > find kathlon and update/ replace. . You can enter it from the command line, unless your partition isn't mounted. Are you just choosing Safe mode from grub? or are you starting the installation and choosing boot installed os? Maybe mk_initrd will work if you go the long way through the first few installation screens and then choose boot installed ...

If you can find that out it'll be helpful.

Both did nothing? I remember from a few weeks ago, there was a problem with aaa_base(?) that was replacing mk_initrd with a mk_initrd package. Try replacing aaa_base through yast2. Try this before the kernel.
Thanks so much for your infos Franklin.

This isn't good ... Have you tried going back to the aaa_base version on the cd? Have you tried booting from the installation cd, and choosing boot installed OS from the screen where it detects your hard drives and stuff? For some odd reason mk_initrd has disappeared from your system. Do you remember if you did a apt-get update before running upgrade? If not when do you think the last time you ran apt-get update was? I'd be willing to bet that you installed the messed up aaa_base and it has wreaked havoc on your machine.
