Hi All, I have gone through all sorts of grief getting my winmodem to work with linux. I am using SuSE 7.1. I have downloaded the kernel-source, have recompiled the kernel and sucessfully installed ltmodem-5.99b (www.heby.de/ltmodem). When I issue the command wvdial, this is what happens: OK --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Idle Seconds = 180, disabling automatic reconnect. --> Sending: ATDT0 808 9933001 --> Waiting for carrier. ATDT0 808 9933001 CONNECT 48000 V42bis --> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately. --> Starting pppd at Tue Jun 12 21:24:17 2001 --> pid of pppd: 2472 --> Disconnecting at Tue Jun 12 21:24:18 2001 --> The PPP daemon has died: No ppp module error (exit code = 4) --> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail. --> Try again and look into /var/log/messages and the wvdial and pppd --> man pages for more information. linux:~ # exit Script started on Tue Jun 12 21:51:31 2001 suse@linux:~ > /usr/sbin/pppd /usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks kernel support for PPP. This could be because the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because PPP was not included in the kernel configuration. If PPP was included as a module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. If that fails, check t suse@linux:~ > /sbin/modprobe -v ppp modprobe: Can't locate module ppp suse@linux:~ > exit Script done on Tue Jun 12 21:52:20 2001 I have only been using linux for two months now and have worked long and hard on getting this thing to work with SuSE. Could anyone give me some advice on what I need to do now as I am unsure at this stage. It seems that when you recompiled the kernel you did NOT add PPP into the kernel, nor as a module... Hope it helps, Alvaro Novo SuSE 7.1 -=- Kernel 2.4.2-4GB -=- KDE 2.1.1 12:14am up 4 days, 1:49, 4 users, load average: 0.08, 0.02, 0.01

I uninstalled the ppp stuff and installed it again with yast. I think that made it work. There was an(other) error with the installation. Lilo was not configured and my MBR was not written. But for the rest of it, SuSE is great :-). I just switched from OS/2 to linux.
