KDE 3.51 for SUSE 10.0 -- why packages so volatile?
Dear developers, With the KDE 3.51 packages, I see build number 18 at suse.com, build 12 at gwdg.de and build 6 or 8 at oregonstate.edu. Why are KDE 3.51 packages so volatile and when can we get stable packages for download? I remember I got ready stable packages for SUSE *immediately* along with the KDE announcement even till KDE 3.50. Thanks for SUSE! :) -- Tux #395953 resides at http://samvit.org playing with KDE 3.50 on SUSE Linux 10.0 $ date [] CCE +2006-02-06 W06-1 UTC+0530

Thanks for your patience in replying. So what build number should I look for, that is stable? Thanks again. -- Tux #395953 resides at http://samvit.org playing with KDE 3.50 on SUSE Linux 10.0 $ date [] CCE +2006-02-06 W06-1 UTC+0530

It doesn't work that way. If they could tell beforehand which version would be stable, then they would simply call all other versions "beta". When a problem is discovered, the package is rebuilt and the version number increases. Sometimes that happens often, sometimes it doesn't happen at all. It all depends on how good the quality of the original source is. And sometimes the version number goes up not because of a bug but because they added a patch that adds a feature. And sometimes the version number goes up simply because it got recompiled, and the automatic build system bumped the version number without any change at all (that's fairly rare though) But the supplementary packages is, was and will always be experimental packages put out there for people who cannot wait. There has always been at least one problem with them, and usually more. It's just the nature of the beast. If you want a stable 3.5.1, then I suggest you wait for SUSE LINUX 10.1
