problem with new 2.4.6-4 kernel, no SCSI found
I just installed the new default rpm kernel on SuSE 7.2. Previous was 2.4.4 in the new distro. Using Yast1, it installed just fine. However, it has totally lost my SCSI dev, or sda4. I cannot mount, or do anything with this. The kernel does not recognize any SCSI dev. How does one go about fixing this, use insmod, or some such. Any help appreciated, and thank you. -- Best regards, Gary
After installing a suse kernel run these: mk_initrd lilo -- Rafael

Rafael, this was perfect. Thank you!!!! I was beginning to panic. I switched from LILO to grub, as I have 2 other distros and Windows on 2 HDs using Grub, so I installed it in SuSE and made the necessary additions to the primary menu.1st file in grub. I forgot all about that mk_initrd. Thanks again. -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Chaos, panic, pandemonium - my work here is done.

Something like that happened to me. The problem was that the critical SCSI modules were being loaded via initrd (have a look in /etc/modules.conf). Effectively, initrd is a pre-loader that brings in specified modules before anything else via an initial image. The modules.conf file lists in one of its parameters which modules are to be preloaded. If this is indeed the problem, be sure that both the necessary device-specific module and the more general module are preloaded, with the general one first. The solution in my case was to run: mk_initrd lilo Of course, if the cause of your problem is different, this solution will be of no help at all. Paul

When you install an "rpm kernel" are you able to configure/compile it as you would with the src?? I would like to compile for my T-Bird, etc. TIA Lourens *** Registered Linux User Lourens Steenkamp Gauteng Republic of South Africa _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
