C. Well, "point the gamers" here - that does not work for persons' like my son that wants to run Windows games on Linux.
According to my son, nothing, so far, runs Windows' games fast enough for my sons' liking. We had high hopes for this one but alas they're not even supported on Linux yet. Keeping looking ........... What do you mean not supported on Linux yet? Desura (what the openFATE is about) has a Linux native client now, with a slowly growing list of games. Desura has just launched on Linux, so no, it will not have 100% crossover between Windows and Linux games (I've seen a few games that use Wine in the list of available Linux games on Desura). You cannot expect that, and Desura isn't a game developer... they are a Cloud Gaming company just like Steam (yes, I know, Valve and Steam, but.. I'm looking only at Steam vs. Desura here). If and when a top game developer releases a Linux native version, Desura will likely be the interface for distribution. Desura takes away one of the key issues that developers liked to point at for why they don't make Linux native games... the multitude of ways you can distribute.. DEB, RPM, tar.gz, binary installers etc etc. With Desura, they hand it over there, and it's up to the Desura interface to install the application within its infrastructure. Some people may hate it, but it does open the door for game developers. On Desura, what you do see is a nice collection of Inde games, some free, some pay-for... some of these games are very good... yah, they may not be BF3, TF2, or Skyrim, but still, there are some very entertaining and top quality games there. You are always going to have issues in one form or another with running "Windows games on Linux".... they are Windows native games, not Linux native. This is no better trying to do the same on Mac OSX. I do a lot of game testing and tinkering, and I've found that in some cases, Windows games actually work *better* in Linux via Wine than they do running in Windows - this is almost always on older Windows games, and it is not the norm. In most cases, you need a lot more computer to run the games than the min requirements to get good game-play performance with Wine. As for nothing running Windows games fast enough... well.. then use Windows for games. I dual boot... Linux for everything except games, and Wintendo (aka Windows) for games that do not run acceptably in Wine. If Wine is too difficult to deal with, then invest in CrossoverGames - it's putting money into Wine development, and you get a nice GUI wrapper around Wine that handles all the prerequisites (for supported games) On the hardware side, I always tell everyone... don't bother trying Wine gaming if you've got ATI. It's simply not worth the pain. ATI cards are fine for other desktop use in Linux, but they fail spectacularly on both OSX and Linux when it comes to gaming with Wine. If you need any proof of that, look at the CrossoverGames forums for the officially supported games... which are basically games that are known to work very well... on popular games like say... Rift for example, the forums ore flooded with people having major problems and almost 100% are people with ATI cards. On nVidia, the game works... I can't say perfect, but reasonably well. I see this over and over... C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
