Just wondering... does anyone know anything about getting speech recognition happening in Linux? I have been doing quite a bit of Google searching etc to try and find stuff on this. IBM seems to have at one time provided ViaVoice for Linux, but the links on their site seem to be broken, and the support for the Linux version seems to have evaporated. I have found a few other Linux projects... one that uses ViaVoice, and another that seems to be no longer supported. So... I have basically ran out of ideas... any suggestions? C.

Hi Clayton, There have been a couple of articles on ViaVoice recently on LinuxWorld. http://www.linuxworld.com/go.cgi?id=741033 The main info can be found here. http://volker.orcon.net.nz/linux/viavoice.html I have not fiddled with ViaVoice for a long time, so don't know if the info is relevant to the latter SuSE releases. Best of luck! -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------
When I was at the Uni I heard that Matlab can be used to write programs for voice recognition. Probably you can install Matlab and write your own voice recognition system. It has lots of filtering and digital signal analysis commands available in its Digital Signal Processing toolbox. Go to http://www.mathworks.com for more information. regards Leo Graham Smith wrote:

Hi, Further to note on ViaVoice, I suggest you look at this HowTo. http://linuxselfhelp.com/HOWTO/Speech-Recognition-HOWTO/software.html Also there is The Festival Speech Synthesis System http://www.cstr.ed.ac.uk/projects/festival/ Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Eeeep.... write my own voice recog. Errr ummm you haven't seen my past attempts at programming have you? ;-) C.

Matlab can surely help with this subject, but programming it is not trivial at all. You are going to have some good basics with DSP and Neural Networks to do that program, even with matlab. In short: this is not a viable alternative for anyone simply looking for a program doing the job:-) Moreover, matlab is not that cheap! Praise
If we could write our own voice recognition systems, we would all be at Sun, or IBM, or MS and making a million a year!!!!! At 20:43 10/16/2002 -0400, Linux Leo wrote:

Not necessarily. I know many crap guys who work for large organizations and many talented guys struggling to get a job. regards Leo Doug McGarrett wrote:

I found the article you mention on ViaVoice.. that's what lead me to look at the IBM site for info on ViaVoice. Problem is, they don't export that product outside of the US and Canada.... if it's available at all anymore since I just get 404 errors on every link from that marketing page for ViaVoice on the IBM website. Interesting that in the summary, the writer suggests that the readers just get SuSE because ViaVoice is bundled in the release. Well, it's not in 8.1 that I can find, so either I can't search properly (a distinct possibility) or it has been removed from the latest release (and I have already found new homes for my old copies of SuSE).
