Has SuSE gone completely mad! As I understand it, the equivalent of what we now know as SuSE would be the professional version. You know, you need only to buy the distro to have all those programs you like so much. But the professional costs about 70$... I use SuSE mainly at home, running an apache web server to test my home-berwed cgi-scripts etc. As I see it, the professional is little more than a diet version of what we're used to, which is useless. I'm afraid SuSE is going much the same way as redhat, which was why I initially switched from RH to SuSE. Does anyone else feel that way too? Guy: Haven't you followed the recent thread on this? If you had just read today's messages (there were at least 6 or 7 on this very topic) you would have understood that there is an update version that will cost you the same or perhaps less than what you paid for previous versions. I thought it was proper netiquette to actually read a thread and/or related postings in a newsgroup before jumping in and in the process putting ones foot in his mouth. From what I see out of that announcement, the "Professional" version is
the equivalent to what we now use.
But the professional costs about 70$...
yes, but for first time users.
I use SuSE mainly at home, running an apache web server to test my home-berwed cgi-scripts etc.

you're now messing personal with professional, IMHO. I wonder wether you can upgrade from "personal" to "professional" in future, without the extra cost. From what I read, we ("old" and registrated customers) will get the update to "professional". Difference will be the book, "update" instead of "install" handbook. Subscription will be the same. (All this from the german announcement). I'd be realy annoyed if it turns out different. Just the starters pack (professional) is more expensive and prices have been constant since I bought my first in 1994/5, I guess the work into it has become more. Then it was 3 CD's: install, source and live file system. This has become more...
I'm afraid SuSE is going much the same way as redhat, which was why I initially switched from RH to SuSE.
I remember discussions about having the update version without the book and make it cheaper. I'd make that above decision after having seen the update. I consider splitting the book into install/update, configuration and programs makes sense, I'll judge this as soon as I see it.
Does anyone else feel that way too?
well, frankly no. Juergen

Yup. That's what I said in a previous post. While SuSE is the best distro out there, I though Linux had a lot more of a competitive edge when it took advantage of the fact that the software was free to offer dirt cheap boxed CD-ROM sets. I could go to CompUSA and choose from SuSE, RedHat, or Caldera for $20-$30 bucks - now a new user (who would want manuals - and wouldn't know he could order a SuSE upgrade version over the 'net anyway) won't get Linux for under 60 bucks. That's a lot of money, and for the hobbist or soho business to pay just to try a really nice Linux distro. It's still cheaper by far and a way versus Windows, but I don't think we're in the good 'ol Linux days anymore. I guess what really gets me is the fact, not that SuSE isn't worth it, but that the Pro edition (which has basically only what I paid $29 for) is now $59 - not the price itself. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Wow , and just a couple of months ago, we were all worried that Red Hat was the next Microsoft. It is amazing how times change :-) Victor -- "Let's get it straight: copyright infringement is not piracy. I really don't think SuSE will become anything akin to M$; hopefully, their international flavor lends more common sense and business savvy. gary PS: there's always Debian... :-)

I was trying to be funny. Every month or so someone starts complaining about X Linux distribution being the next Microsoft. I guess its SuSE's turn this month. I actually recommended Debian to someone on this list a couple of days ago. Victor -- "Let's get it straight: copyright infringement is not piracy. PS2: Or Stormix, essentially a cross between SuSE and Debian.
