If you can get your hands on February 2001 edition of Linux Magazine, there is an article regarding laptops and linux. They talk about 10 or so different models and what they found when configuring.

I haven't read Linux Mag yet (UK or US?) but you should be particularly careful if you want to run SuSE as Dell laptops are much happier with Red Hat - I am installing RH on my Inspiron (thanks to some useful web resources) because it works. I can't install SuSE - the pcmcia support screws up the installation, I have instructions for coping with this with RH but no clue with SuSE. Also X works under RH as there is a config file (and appropriate server) available, but no support in SuSE. I might be able to work around these problems, but I don't know enough yet :-( This is unfortunate as in my opinion SuSE is much easier to install/maintain than RH, yast makes life much easier, and I hate having to sort out dependencies myself for a large installation. If there is a workround for 7.0 and the ATI Rage Mobility 128 and PCMCIA on a Dell I8000 pleae let me know so that I can install SuSE (or if this will be available in 7.1). regards, Bill

I'm just getting ready to install Linux on my Dell Inspiron 5000e, but I can tell you it's a very fine piece of equipment, and you can beat Dell for a high quality warrantee and hardware support. I think you can find more information at the "Linux Laptops" site under the Dell Inspiron 3800/4000/5000e/7000/etc. that you receive information about (an absolutely wonderful site!). SuSE's desktop is more stable and with the professional version I get all the software I need. What I am really hoping for is that someone can say: "I run SuSE 7.0 on an IBM 390 thinkpad (for example) and everything works". Many on this list have given me very good advice. Agreed, I'd much rather run SuSE than RedHat. When I bought the laptop I already had a PCMCIA network card, and I knew that I'd want to run linux if I could so I decided to buy a PCMCIA modem and drop the internal modem, I don't know if this is an option for you, it does cost a little more but I was happy. I will have another attempt at installing SuSE on the laptop when I know more about the differences between it and RH, but that is one of the reasons I want to run linux on the laptop in the first place. So far I run SuSE as a server without knowing much about the internals - I know I should try harder but I only have so much time! I prefer SuSE to RH, and I prefer both to winXXXX. regards, Bill
