I need information as to how I can produce a tar.gz archive of my home directory, with all files and subdirectories set out so that I can unpack the archive in case I need to replace the /home directory, etc. I looked in the Howtos, and found no help. The manual pages are inadequate and therefore unhelpful as well. thanks dj tuchler
You should be root to do this since /home may contain other directories. su # set uid to root cd /home tar czf /tmp/home.tar.gz . The reason I specified /tmp is that you do not want to put the tar archive in the same directory you are archiving. Doing it this way, you will get the entire contents of /home, but with relative patch names so you can easily restore in any directory. On 11 Apr 2002 at 14:12, Dennis Tuchler wrote:

Midnight Commander wil do it for you. Position it inside your home directory and press F2. Select option 3 Make a release of the current subdirectory (tar.gz), and that's it. Regards. - -- Alfredo J. Be careful with that one. It's meant for software releases and will replace symlinks with the linked files/directories. - -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE8ttN4+FOexA3koIgRAl/mAKCWW06LSY5snxFjKOeBRq7EFhyK8ACfUMKg 71KQEtZfJiqSseYbPH2mRlc= =GL5A -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
# cd / # tar zcvf home.tar.gz home To recover # cd / # tar zxvf home.tar.gz z means compress (Use I if you want a bz2 image) c means create x means extract v means verbose (tells you what's in the archive) f means tar to/from a file: the filename follows f and the target comes at the end. I use this for porting to solaris where I don't have gnu tar and so have to use the extra step # gunzip directory.tar.gz # tar xvf directory.tar JDL Dennis Tuchler wrote:
