There are still a number of morons out there who think anything with Winelib behind it isn't a Linux application so they won't use it. Don't listen to them. This is a classy application, ported to Linux, just like we are screaming for vendors to do. It works well, and they've given it away free - possibly as a showcase. It seems that good. Corel are struggling and they deserve our support.
[snip]
I resent that, Derek. I'm certainly no moron, and it ISN'T a Linux app. if it depends on Wine....which I don't and won't use.
Resent it all you like. Corel's apps don't depend on Wine. They depend on Winelib. People who form opinions about what is and isn't a Linux app when they clearly don't know what is going on, then spout that opinion to all who will listen, are, IMHO, morons.
You defend Winelib here but in your last message you admit to what I think is a showstopper. If these Windows apps are using different versions of Winelib then we are going to run into our own version of dll hell. Not to mention Samy's concern with using Winelib on older hardware. WP8 has always worked great for me and I will continue using it as long as it runs on my system. When WP8 no longer runs, I will switch to another native wordprocessor. I tested Corel PhotoPaint 9 for Linux for two days. I waited for it, version 5 was my very first image editing application and I am pretty much acustomed to it's usage. The main thing is that I am rather dissapointed by it, it feels much more slower than Win 32 version and I guess that it has do to with Wine usage. But to be fair releasing it for free was a very good step by Corel and quite unexpected. I did like the installer too. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Well, I maintain they are not Windows apps, but I see your point. But be fair - Winelib is still alpha code. Corel may have jumped the gun by using it before version 1 is out, so if they get into a mess they only have themselves to blame. But I doubt they will have problems. IBM's Toppage (now called Home Page Builder) uses Winelib, but that application is in beta, so they've just taken a snapshot of a Winelib they knew worked reasonably well. You can't say we're heading for DLL hell when these products are only just appearing. When Winelib hits v1.0 (that's a goal that is being worked towards now), applications will be made to work with it, just like when any other library is updated. The early pioneers might find they have to issue patches to get around binary incompatibilites, but that's no huge problem. I've never told anyone what they should and shouldn't use. We're on a platform where we have plenty of choice, which is great. What bugs me is that people who should know better pontificate their opinions that apps which have been ported from Windows using Winelib are not native Linux apps, and therefore should not be supported. This is crap, and newbies shouldn't listen to it. People who are producing top quality apps for Linux should receive nothing but enthusiastic support. Those who are into negative advocacy should simply use something else and keep their mouths shut.

As long as it keeps it's libraries in it's own directory, "DLL hell" won't ever happen in Linux.

Any proof winelib apps run slower? I must beg to differ with Samy anyway. I have Windows 98 running nicely on a 486 DX2 66 and really good on both a Pentium 100 and a PPro 166. Nearly any modern hardware can handle Windows based code.

Doesn't WP8 use Winelib too? And if not, it probably has some proprietary library similar to it - unless you really believe Corel wrote WP8 from scratch for Linux. -Tim ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Tim , your contradicting your self <grin> Good question thogh , does corel WPO2000 ise wine or winelib ? Fact - applixware runs better/quicker on the same P150 than WPO2000. In my optinion WPO2000 was not usable on that calss hardware , where as applixware is usable on the same box. It just took to long for the scroll boxes and text highlighting to show up on WPO2000 , where as they came up right away on applixware. If your using win98 on a 486 , then I am preetty sure you would be ahppy with corel WPO2000 on a P150. I on the other hand use an AMD K6/350 , and use the P150 , and just couldent stand waiting for WPO2000 to redraw the sceen and such. Spioled you maight say. Uh, I meant is WP8 (not 2000) using WINELIB or does it use something COREL created internally? WP2000 uses WINELIB. Any app ported from Windows, and compiled in Linux using any type of WINE will use WINELIB. Wine is only for apps that weren't ported.

Must be the luck of the Irish! :)
But, seriously, there IS an issue with it... no exceptions. If they haven't
had any problems, then they more than likely will [BSOD - kernel.vxd issue].
It is a well known problem with the AMD 350+ in Win95... it was a memory
timing issue.
Of course, if you put PC66 SDRAM in (Pre 1998) then this slows the memory
timing down to 66MHz, therefore bypassing the memory timing problem... this
in turn makes the system run slower than the normal 350+ machines that
SHOULD have PC100 memory in as these run at a 100MHz backbone
