Folks, I've been happyly using Suse 8.0 (updated with latest packages about 2 months ago) and KDE for the last year or so. Problem is a few days ago after a reboot of my machine, once I log in, I immediately get a KDE crash alert and when I close the alert my KDE control bar on the bottom of the screen disappears... This does not seem to happen if I login as root. Seems like something in my desktop is corrupted. How do I fix this? Can I just blow away the Desktop directory and start afresh? I seem to be running KDE 3.0.5 and was wondering if I should update to 3.1.4 the latest current release. How complicated would that be? Thanks for your help. Switch to a console session via Ctrl+Alt+F1. Login as root. Go to /tmp and as root, delete all of your userid directories such as kde-userid, ksocket-userid, mcop-userid, orbit-userid, etc. Then switch back to Ctrl+Alt +F7 and see if your login works. You may have to switch to runlevel 3 (init3 on your F1 console where you are logged in as root) and then go back to runlevel 5 (init5 at the F1 console) to restart the X server. Worth a try. This has worked for me for various KDE issues in the past. Stan
