Are you using /etc/hosts.allow hosts.deny by some chance? What ftp deamon do you use (/etc/inetd.conf)? is it *realy* installed (locate filename / ls -l file and looking ;-)) I had a similar problem with popper... Did you install the ftp daemon you have enabled in /etc/inetd.conf? Means, does the binary exists in the given path? Which ftp daemon do you believe you have configured (proftp, wuftp, etc.)? Are you launching this as an inetd service (in which case you would need to make certain you have uncommented the appropriate service in /etc/inetd.conf and that you are not blocking connection through the /etc/hosts.allow or /etc/hosts.deny files) or as a stand-alone daemon? For what it's worth, the proftp has worked perfectly for me in either configuration. The only catch is to remember to edit the /etc/proftpd.conf file at the line reading "ServerType" : ServerType inetd #ServerType standalone ... thus setting it to either "inetd" or "standalone." Proftp does depend on the ftpdir package being installed. -Thomas Long tlong@eskimo.com -- Using SuSE Linux 7.3

I learn this the hard way ;) You should ckeck if your FTP server really working. Enabling the FTP server in YAST2 doesn't mean you enabled the FTP server. If the binary wasn't on your computer, then the FTP server won't be started. If this is the case, you must install the binary. $ ps -A | grep "ftp" if you didn't found your FTP server binary there, you need to install the binary.
Also make sure you have inetd configured to use the
FTP server you have selected. Check out
/etc/inetd.conf and you'll see 3 entries for FTP.
The default is in.ftp. If you installed a different
package (like wu-FTPD), then comment the in.ftpd line,
and uncommect the appropriate entry.
