[opensuse] Unpacking .MSI files
OUCH! I've been sent what _should_ have been a .zip but comes as a .msi As i'm told this is "much the same thing". But not to me.... Apparently this is how some MS-weenies package things. Perhaps he did it knowing that I'm a Linux type and did it to annoy. P7zip gives ma listing but in there is a .cab file and I thnk that has all the file tree that I want. So how should .msi files be handled under Linux? -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Try wine and msiexec like http://sysblogd.wordpress.com/2008/05/10/howto-extract-all-files-from-micros... And if you could get the cab file, just try cabextract. Gruß Jan -- Beware of altruism. NOT! The couple or three times I've tried WINE have been frustrating FAILs! Of the first water. I'm looking for native Linux solutions. -- /"\ \ / ASCII Ribbon Campaign X Against HTML Mail / \ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You can unpack the .msi with 7z, and the cab with cabextract. -dnh -- As it turned out, this cute girl I had been talking too spoke Russian. One instant gift at hand. This is supposed to be a hierarchy of files. There's a lot in the .msi when I list it with 7z. What are all those other files for? I'm only guessing that the cab has what I want, simply because it is the largest item in the listing. Gives me some HUGE .exe and lots and lot of, some pretty huge, .dll files. This is life under MS? MS is getting more and more exclusive[]1 and MS-Weenies seem to be taking arrogant pride in the fact that they produce non-portable and incompatible stuff. Errata: "Well, they sent you some program, not data"
MS is getting more and more exclusive[]1 and MS-Weenies seem to be taking arrogant pride in the fact that they produce non-portable and incompatible stuff.
But man, a program is _never_ "compatible". It never has been ⁽¹⁾ You can not send a Linux program to a MAC user or a Windows user, or an Android user, and expect them to be able to do anything with them. This is so in any direction and combination, it is just plain absurd. So, again: tell your correspondent to send you DATA, not programs. Guessing, maybe they previously sent you some DATA for you to view or do something, which you could not see, not having the adequate program, so you told them that you could not open those files, and thus they helpfully responded by sending you the WINDOWS PROGRAM that opens those files. (1) Exceptions: some java programs that were built to be portable. And a few others /interpreted/ language programs. - -- Cheers Carlos E. R.
