Hi, ome time ago, I heard someone talk about the ext3-filesystem. I've search the web for information about it, but found nothing (maybe a bad search?). Can anyone point me to some kind of description? Both are jounalling (or is it journaled?) file systems. ext3 is an extension of the good old ext2, you can switch between journaled and non-journaled without trouble and you do not need to reformat your partitions to use it. ReiserFS and a completely new approach, using different algorithms to store the data (binary trees) and has some more features (like resizing without reformatting and the capability of plugins to extend the functionality). I guess as soon as they both are ready for productive use, it will be yet another religious issue like your favourite editor or window manager... Let's see how SGI's XFS and IBMs JFS come along. Which leads to the next question: What is a journaling file system? In short: the file system keeps a separate log of all transactions that have been made on it. So there is no need to do a complete check of the full fule system, when it has been unmounted uncleanly (e.g. due to a crash), replaying the journal is enough. The advantage: no hour-long file system checks on reboot ;) Here's a long discussion about this on Slashdot: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=00/03/30/2256219&mode=flat Bye, LenZ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Lenz Grimmer SuSE GmbH mailto:grimmer@suse.de Schanzaeckerstr. 10 http://www.suse.de/~grimmer 90443 Nuernberg, Germany -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
