[SLE] wvdial and lack of permissions
Dear All, I use wvdial as my PPP dialer. I generally can use it as regular user without any trouble. However, from time to time, and without apparent reason, the system complains saying ramon@ligarto:~ > wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.40 --> Cannot open /dev/ttyS1: Permission denied And I am getting tired of having to login as root, and do a chmod to restore the permissions to w for members of the group (yeah, sure, its just a one-liner, but it is annoying anyway). Why is this happening and how can I prevent it? [Note: I am using SuSE 6.3]. Here's my best guess... look into rc.config (through YaST, system administrator menu), it's probably changing your permissions file everytime you run SuSEconfig. Alvaro Novo SuSE 6.3 Kernel 2.2.13 KDE 1.1.2

Thanks a lot to Alvaro Novo, Rik Dunphy and Tochiro for their answers, but I still don't seem to be able to fix it. Yes, I am a member of uucp and dialup. Second, the change does not always happen after changing the configuration (i.e., it does not seem to always be triggered by suseconfig running). And third, I have examined rc.config several times and I don't seem to see what needs to be changed (I do want rc.config to run when I change the setup; what I'd like is it not to change the ttyS1 permissions, if it does). Ramon, Firstly, I think the group should be dialout, not dialup. And secondly, did a look on support database and got this... http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/hoe_wv_perm_tty.html Seems it is a problem when the PPPD doesn't terminate correctly, which would explain why it only happens from time to time. The link includes a work around which basically gets the pppd to reset the permissions every time anyway. Good Luck RikD Ramon Diaz-Uriarte wrote:

Thanks a lot for the last round of asnwers from Rik Dunphy and Ken Archer; that solves the mistery and the problem. I reproduce their messages below. ** R Dunphy (...) did a look on support database and got this... http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/hoe_wv_perm_tty.html Seems it is a problem when the PPPD doesn't terminate correctly, which would explain why it only happens from time to time. The link includes a work around which basically gets the pppd to reset the permissions every time anyway. **K. Archer ***** According to the author of wvdial, it changes the permissions to root every time you run it and then changes it back when you close it. Sometimes, however, when it is not shut down properly, I think it should be Ctrl-C if I remember correctly, it doesn't have a chance to change the permissions back. You then have to do it manually. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
SuSEconfig. will change the permissions everytime it is run. Did you add yourself (and whatever others) to the uucp and dialout groups? I did this and it has worked perfectly ever since... RikD. "Alvaro A. Novo" wrote:
