Thanks for the reply, you were the only one so far. I'm cross-posting this message to the KDE and SuSE lists in the hope that someone out there has insights/solutions to this problem. I think that your suggestion that the problem lies with the kernel has merit. Before I go into this mornings attempts with the kernel, let me throw something else into the stew. Minicom works, both on the console and in a console window in KDE (I'm using 2.2b1). It dials in, it handshakes, it lets me log on and stays up until I tell minicom to hang up. Does this argur for, or against, a kernel problem? I don't have the faintest idea. Now as to my attempts with the 2.4.o kernel this morning. I ripped out the kernel source tree and reinstalled a pristine copy from the CD. Make mrproper cleaned up the tree. When I ran make xconfig I accepted every default, with the exception of PPP support, the driver for my National Semiconductor ethernet card, and vfat and smb support. I then compiled and booted with bzImage. Didn't change anything. Here is the wvdial log: Script started on Thu Aug 2 09:01:35 2001 AbNormal:~ # wvdial --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Sending: ATM1L1 ATM1L1 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Dialing jadeinc.com . --> Sending: ATDT2211119 --> Waiting for carrier. I upgraded from 7.0 to 7.2 and my ppp scripts stopped working. I haven't completely isolated the problem, but I think it has something to do with the kernel options. I have wvdial working as a temp fix until I can get my own script working again.

To: Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2001 5:03 PM Subject: Fwd: [SLE] Problem with pppd It would appear that I left a few facts out. The distribution was just upgraded to 7.1. I used to be able to dial out with the same equipment in v6.4
An immediately fatal error of some kind occurred.' /var/log/messages has couldn't set tty to ppp discipline.' What I'm missing is a mystery to me.
I would appreciate a solution, or where to look to find an understandable solution.
Thanks in advance.

Seems I have more than one problem. I recompiled my kernel and modules.
This stopped pppd from complaining about char-major-108. Right now my
dial-in script works unless I use the demand option. For some reason, that
kills pppd. My error: "transfer_ppp failed: wanted unit 0, got 1."
Does anyone have any idea what that means or how to tell pppd to use unit 1?
pppd will go into demand mode and ppp0 is waiting patiently for net
activity. As soon as I start a browser or ping out, it dies with the above
message.

I had this error using the 2.2.x kernel from the SuSE 7.2 CDs, and fixed this by using the 2.4.x kernel instead. Nik
