I start in console with startx and when the screen with the KDE image it stops at the point that the info that the desktop starts shows up. Nothing after that works for me. No ctrl alt f1 etc. I do not have kpager installed as far as I know. In previous versions of kde some of these problems were solved by renaming .kde to .kde-old and restarting the xserver. A new .kde is then created. However remember that you loose all of your settings on the desktop, and have to reconfigure some stuff by looking through files in .kde-old. This can take some time.
