[opensuse] Wireless network password
I installed my Linksys router and wireless adaptor some months ago, set it up for secured access to prevent outside use. My own laptop already is setup to use it. I assume I set up a password but cannot find it or how to find it so I can give someone else access. Any suggestions? Is it stored in some file that, as root, I might have access to? Thanks for any suggestions. Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can see it in the web access to the router, probably at http://192.168.1.1. Click on "Wireless", then "Wireless Security". There you will see the security mode, passphrase or WEP Key 1. Thanks for your reply. As usual, I had no idea that existed that way...but it says I need a username and password to access. Bummer. Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Linksys routers are pretty dumb. The default is either admin/admin or admin/password, unless you have changed them. Actually, no username is required, just the password. If that fails, push the reset button and hold for 10-15 seconds and it will be set to factory default. Usually, the default username and password for Linksys router / AP are admin with password admin or blank password. Also, you can reset the configuration into default factory setting by pressing the reset button for about 10 seconds. -- Best Regards, Masim "Vavai" Sugianto /************************************************************/ Blog (ID) : http://www.vavai.com/blog/index.php Blog (EN) : http://www.vavai.net Community : http://www.opensuse.or.id Commercial : http://toko.vavai.biz Email : vavai@vavai.com /************************************************************/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for all the replies and assistance. Worked with admin and my own admin password, so apparently I did change that...but can get access now and ability to make accessible and change password. If you still have the documentation for the router, there should be a way to reset to default. After you do this you'll have to go through and reset everything including the login password and your keys for wireless. Then you'll know what they are. Just make sure you write them down. ;-) Mike -- Powered by SuSE 10.0 Kernel 2.6.13 X86_64 KDE 3.4 Kmail 1.8 4:04pm up 11 days 3:32, 4 users, load average: 2.24, 2.42, 2.29 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Since it`s your router, you`ll need that ID & password, if you wish to make any changes. IIRC the user ID is admin. If you can`t remember the password, you may have to reset it to factory default. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Please don't use WEP, if you want security. It's very easy to break. Use WPA instead. There are also WPA key generators available on the internet, which will generate a "random" 63 character key. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Information on the network card configuration can be found in /etc/sysconfig/network for wireless it usually in a file aith the name in that directory ifcfg-<network interface>-id-<MAC address> Though Yast may also report some of this info. I am not certain this is the case if you are using network manager as I prefer not to use it... BTW you proabaly will need to be root to view it.... - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone. You likely used a shared key (hopefully WPA and not WEP). It should not be visible in your configuration, but may be in your access point. If you can't find it, simply generate a new key and configure your access point and computer with it and then use it to enable your visitor. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not that you can get to. There's a reset button most likely on the back of the router...maybe the front. Hold in the reset for about 3 secs., turn off the router then back on. This will reset everything to default. The password will be on the bottom of the router. You can then go in with Konq. or FireFox and resetup the router.
