<snip> You probably need to read the YAST docs. From the KDE main menu (green button bottom left) select System->YAST->Software->Install Software; then type in 'mozilla' in the Search blank, select Mozilla and the finish button (lower right). -- "Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? Depends on what mozilla you downloaded, a rpm or a tar.gz from mozilla.org. YaST for the rpm, but "tar zxfv mozilla-xxx.tar.gz -C /usr/local", you can then start it as /usr/local/mozilla from the command line or alter the path in the (right click on icon) preferences on the mozilla desktop icon. now i have a basic question. can somone explain to me how to install software or updates etc..i downloaded mozilla but i don't get it installed. depending upon your internet connection , you can have mozilla do an internet install, unless they stopped that w/ the new webdesign/facelift. That way you would get a mozizilla browser and whichever of the extra componants you wish. And my advice to you , as a newbie, in order to get your work done , while reading up and learning all the neat things Linux can do... get rpm's to install programs, especially ones intended for Suse specifically, if Suse is the distro you are using. ( Some on the list are using other distros ) I am not certain if there is a South Eastern Asia mirror, but even if there isn't the time difference should give you a good chance to download programs from Packman
there you will get other information about these programs, such as any needed other libraries .. usually those are also available, and most will be available as an installable "rpms" often installs as easily is "click on rpm file" and in the last few suse versions a window will open asking if you would like to have it installed w/ yast2. if you say yes, yast2 will install the package. When you get comfortable , or to a location where the local LUG will speak your native tounge, then you can , and should get "under the hood" and see what events are happening when you do the install the way I just explained. Try NOT to install a lot of programs you don't need to explore yet. At least not until you become more comfortable w/ the OS. Depending on what you used before, you will find it bewildering at first, or just marvel at the things you will be able to do . once caveat, many Linux programs are not released as binaries, and you will have to learn to "roll your own" . Meaning you will need to compile the program yourself. This is an easy or daunting task, also depending on what packages you install or installed ( compilers etc.) included on the CDs/dvd in the boxed set.... hope you enjoy your new journey. Most of us are happy w/ Linux, most of the time. But it must be said, any compuer Operating System can be annoying at times. -- j nemo me impune lacessit wwEd it's just an afterthought; okay ? : The devil finds work for idle glands.
