SuSE 10: Realtek 8139 module loads but has no connection
I have installed SuSE 10 on an ASUS "expresso" mini computer. It has a Realtek 8139 network chip. The module loads fine, yast has no issues, /var/log/messages reports link status is up, but I can't ping or get any connection though it. I've even reinstalled just in case I messed something up. The firewall is off. I can modprobe by hand just fine, or use YaST - either way - and again /var/log/messages shows that link status is UP. Any idea what is wrong? What could be preventing the connection from working? I tried the cable on another computer to double check and it's not the cable. Also the address is not in use by any other computer. Is the module bad? I'm useing the 8139too module when I do it by hand. When I do it with YaST I also see 8139cp and mii modules. -- ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com

For the archives: After some more googleing (really, I looked for a long time before I posted) I found that it's the ACPI bug as reported here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=116397 -- ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com

I have tried Suse 10 on a Thinkpad with a Realtek cardbus NIC and have had a similar problem (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=132472), which I still have not been able to resolve. The install was fine, Yast found the NIC fine and ifconfig shows the NIC as up and running....except it has no DHCP address, and if you give it a static it still won't connect to the network, but every time you issue a ping or a DHCP request the loopback byte count goes up.... I have tried turning off ACPI but this makes no difference.... -- Tim Nicholson http://www.bbc.co.uk/ This e-mail (and any attachments) is confidential and may contain personal views which are not the views of the BBC unless specifically stated.
