I have been told squirell can be found here: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/php:/applications/openSUSE... but I wonder if there is any "default" webmail for openSUSE 11.1, as I can't find any in YaST?? thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sorry it doesn't look like it is in the OSS repo, as it is more for a server it does make sense for it to be in php:/applications, but here is all the repos in the build service that has squirrelmail http://software.opensuse.org/search?baseproject=openSUSE:11.1&p=1&q=squirrelmail Hope this helps -- "We must plan for freedom, and not only for security, if for no other reason than only freedom can make security more secure." thanks, I can manage this, but usually when an app is no more supported it's for a reason, so why I like better use default one if any. time ago there where several, why none now? or may be I didn't find the goos selection criteria thanks jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Too much effort went into security maintenance of squirrelmail. That's why it was dropped in the standard distribution. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

ok, I understand, problem there is none in openSUSE :-( my goal is to be able to use my mail from my own server from anywhere in the world. no more than 3/4 users and no mass mailing. I used squirell some years ago, it was simple (may be too simple). Do you think It's possible to manage security himself (I already do this for PmWiki, this need reasonable/manageable update policy for squirell) - the recent breaking of the squirell home web site is a bit threatening :-( but is IMP/HORDE better on this respect? this one also used to be in suse and is no more. Zimbra seems overkill for me. I can also completely giveup using y own server for this purpose, But I would like to learn server admin so I'm reluctant to do so :-)) thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://news.opensuse.org/2009/04/13/people-of-opensuse-jean-daniel-dodin/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It is possible to monitor a few applications directly, but it will quickly become impossible to patch everything yourself. My compromise is to use an additional repository that provides squirrelmail and check that repository for updates.

Not much better. It is more a question of preference.
Zimbra seems overkill for me.

The only way to really learn something about administration is to do it yourself. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I use IMP/HORDE and have for years; I can't recommend it highly enough. It is the only PHP app to be reasonably manageable IMO. But thing is that it works consistently with even the most borked e-mail messages sent from whacked clients including messages that cause Thunder Bird to freak out. Go to http://software.opensuse.org/search and search for "Horde". The http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/php:/applications/openSUSE... repo seems to have all the packages. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The svn of squirrelmail 1.5 has done very well for me. Just create a self signed certificate for apache and access squirrelmail via https authenticating against a simple dbm database eliminates virtually all of the concerns. Use something like the following for your squirrelmail directory .htaccess: # FollowSymLinks required for rewrite Options +Indexes +FollowSymLinks # http-to-https ssl rewriting using mod_rewrite <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^192\.168\.6\. RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on RewriteRule .* https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [R,L] </IfModule> You will need to enable mod_rewrite. I have some notes about this setup at: http://www.3111skyline.com/linux/openSuSE-server.php#apache2 The script I use to generate the self-signed certificates is attached. If you set your server info as the "Pre-set" variables in the script, it will run fully automated. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
