hi all, What programming language of those should I choose to begin in Linux, specially if I work in a network ? This depends on what you want to do. Most of the code in Unix and Linux systems is written in C or C++. Perl is an excellent language to use if you are a system administrator, and Python is also very good. Java's advantage is that you can write an applet that will (hopefully) work accross platforms. So, it really depends on specifically what you intend to do, and what type of training you already have. (IMHO, if you want to learn C++, I would hope that you first get a bit of background in C and take a course). If you have no programming background at all, and want to learn by yourself, then neither Java nor C++ are probably good languages. There are many good (and not so good) books on C, C++, Java, Perl and Python.

Java is a well structured OO language, however it has slow execution time on its applications, and if you want to use applets, you have to stick with the very old version 1.1 if you are targeting windows users (m$ vm stopped at version 1.1), else require your users to download the latest update for the jre. C++ is a proven language with better speed performance over java, and like someone already mentioned, many Linux programs are written in C or C++ -=JericAtSbcglobalDotNetwork=- 10:38am up 55 days, 15:25, 9 users, load average: 0.24, 0.56, 0.54 "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" -Who will watch the watchers? --Juvenal 100 A.D. The answer to this question should be the same as what religion you want to follow. Anyways, Java is good for web type of development and is easier to learn than C++. For web development where you have to interface with databases and other web services I would say go with Java. C++ is good for fast optimized desktop applications, especially if you use something like Qt. But thats just my opinion. Your religion/intuition may tell you something else. Salman
