[opensuse] 10.3 : Cannot get ATI fglrx working
10.3 upgrade (reinstall) on thinkpad T60.10.2 was running ATI drivers just fine, also had compiz running great. No matter what I do, I cannot get away from the VESA framebuffer drivers with 10.3. I've downloaded a version of the ATI drivers - 8.40.4 which supports xorg 7.2. The installer runs, apparently OK, aticonfig says it's has fixed the xorg.conf file. However, checking for the fglrx kernel module comes back empty, so I manually loaded the fglrx module with the script in /lib/modules/fglrx, and it now shows up in lsmod. Nonetheless, if I run sax2, I only ever get the vesa FB, non 3D graphics. Running sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx fails, and the log shows no devices found. Any ideas, anyone? "no devices found" is the error message from the 8.41 driver. Are you sure you removed it completely before installing the 8.40 driver? Also, don't trust sax about 3d here. It doesn't know about the fglrx driver you just installed. Once you have the 8.40 driver properly installed and the 8.41 version completely removed, run "sax2 -m 0=fglrx" and accept the settings. You will get 3d from it Anders -- Madness takes its toll -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I had too a lot troubles instaling ATI drivers in 10.3. I finally
managed to install it from runlevel 3 uninstalling it previously. It
was the only way the installation was complete and running.
Excuse me for my bad English.

I've got this card: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series] init 3 sh /path/to/ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run After installing the drivers , just run: aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --force And init 5 SaX2 tells that my card is VESA Framebuffer, so do not run sax2, I have not got around to filing a bug. If you do not beat me to it, and post a bug number here, I'll be doing it later today. init 3
sh /path/to/ati-driver-installer-8.40.4-x86.x86_64.run
After installing the drivers , just run:
aticonfig --initial --input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf --force
And init 5
I didn't use Sax2 - exactly what you did here without running Sax2. Works fine for me. Just make sure you have the compilers installed as it needs to compile a module. In fact I ran the installer in graphics mode and it still worked. -- Martin Hooper http://www.martinjh.myby.co.uk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
