Erik Jakobsen Hello,
Some days ago, I posted the same question on the list, and now I have a working ToUcam Pro. To get it working, you'll need the pwc module. See: http://www.seismo.ethz.ch/linux/webcam.html You'll find the pwc module -with instructions- here: http://www.saillard.org/pwc/ -- Pablo Ortúzar

I have a pwc webcam... It's a pity the kernel requires patching to get it to work now.

I expect Linus will at some stage put it back into his kernel tree. There was a dispute with the original developer and he asked for his code to be removed, but Alan Cox and others stepped up to the plate. It's available in Alan's -ac kernels at present. It'll be back. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

1) The above instructions build the pwc.ko module which I do not believe will run your camera. You say you need the ov511 module. I find on my 9.2 system that the ov511 module is already there. Try a modprobe ov511 and see if you get errors. 2) The errors you see above can be fixed by: 1) Making sure you have the kernel source loaded on your system. 2) cd /usr/src/linux 3) make cloneconfig 4) make prepare 5) Go back and do the pwc instructions again.

You could try the latest patch from http://www.saillard.org/pwc/ (linux-2.6.8_pwc-10.0.4.patch.bz2 or pwc-10.0.5.tar.bz2) on a copy of your existing kernel sources first and if that doesn't apply cleanly, then get 2.6.9 and apply the -ac8 patch. It's wise not to damage what works, so you could "cp -dpR linux-2.6.8-24.3 linux-2.6.8-24-X" cd to that new directory and change the EXTRAVERSION in the Makefile to -24-X. When you patch this new kernel, your original sources are still intact, your kernel and modules are still there, so if you have a problem of any kind with the new kernel, you can just reboot on your original, this gives you scope to test things out in safety. Oops, I just realised I have 28 kernel images lying around, I'm not cramped for disk space, but I must do a cleanup of /boot, /lib/modules and /usr/src. It's been many years since I've written any code, but I test kernels and other software, feeding back problems or fixes to the developers as my contribution, the developers like to catch bugs early and occasionally just one person will experience a bug right away, others will hit it some releases on, that recently happened to me when I hit a bug 2 weeks later and 2 kernels later than a lot of other guys. Yeah, the problem is that the pwcx module, the bit that actually makes it usable (without it you can only go up to 160x120 pixels) isn't GPL, because the developer worked under an NDA with Philips, moreover it's not easy to compile it separately because of the way the new version of the module's been written, you have to patch it into the kernel. So, Linus may at some point reinstate the pwc module, but the pwcx module remains problematic. -- James Ogley james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://rubberturnip.org.uk Currently playing: Radio Five Live

Besides Alan, there was also a company that used these cameras en masse
in a special spectrometry project , they volunteered to take it on also,
they reckoned that the pwcx module didn't get the best out of the camera
and was unuseable in their application, so they had to write their own
that could easily be ported as a much improved replacement for pwcx. I
never saw anything further from them when Alan said he'd take it on.
