Using Mozilla on my SuSe 7.3 I have downloaded realplayer from Netscape. I have run the rpm and according to my info it is there. But if I try to use it on any movie I am every time and again told that I have to download the plugin. Must have missed something. Can somebody tell me howto get the realplayer been recognised?
If you have mozilla installed in /opt/mozilla and realplayer in /usr/lib/ReadPlayer8, then as root just type ln -s /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/raclass.zip /opt/mozilla/plugins/raclass.zip ln -s /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/rpnp.so /opt/mozilla/plugins/rpnp.so Much much quicker than the "correct" way of doing it (which i cant even remember). Make sure these to files are put into the plugins directory. raclass.zip rpnp.so Then in the preferences you need to go under Navigator --> Helper Applications and click new type. In this new type you need to put audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin in MIME type and point it to rpnp.so as the application to handle this. You can also specify the mime types such as rm and ram. This works for me. :) -=Ben --=====-----=====-- mailto:ben@whack.org --=====-- If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little. -GC --=====-----=====--
Having just been through this Pile of Used Food, I have several
hypotheses. Either the server is requiring a specific version
(e.g. G2 or RealPlayer 8 or Real Player One) and not saying so. Or
the browser is not configured with the application/helper. Or the
browser is telling the server something not exactly what the
programmer expected.
I am trying to do an on-line class. The SW/HW requirements say NS 4.0
or better, IE 5.0 or better, Real Player (no version), and Flash 4.0
or better.
I tried NS 4.77 on Linux w/ Real Player G2, and Flash (unknown
version); the server couldn't see the Real Player, though G2 is
supported according to their trouble shooting guide.
Next, Win2k running in VMware WS 3.1 on Linux, IE 5.5, and Real
Player, and Flash. Passed the requirements check, locked up the whole
box as soon as the first video started. Twice. (Not certain about
firewall and this is the gateway router, so not willing to leave it
on-line for 6+ hours to take the course).
Win98 w/ NS 4.7x, Real Player, and Flash. I've forgotten why this
didn't work.
Win98 w/ IE 5.0 SP1, Real Player. Detected no Flash, redirected to
site to download Flash 5.0. Detected no Flash, tried again with
currenct version, Flash 6.0. Now claims version 0 is loaded.
Back to Linux box, tried Opera 6.0 TP 3, as a last gasp. It works,
poorly, but it works. Notice, nothing download since first try. Why
it likes Opera, but not NS with the same helper apps I don't know.

I took what I perceived to be the quickest route. I'm listening now to the RealPlayer which came on my SuSE CD. I lost enough time trying to run more generic versions of RP. In fact, compared to the length of time it takes to connect on Win2K with RP One, and the multiple dependencies on responding servers, I'll settle for the minimal SuSE version. I have NS 6.2 running (standard on-line download, not SuSE version), but I have found no browser plug-in capabilities with RP on my SuSE 7.3. The simple SuSE RP doesn't care whether I have a browser running. I start up NS only when Opera or Konq fail, so I'm happy with the independence. To set up internet radio stations on the SuSE RP, I must find the web sites of the stations and save their .ram files to my master directory of .ram files. Once that is done, there is no dependency on any RealPlayer server being accessible; only my local telco server and the target station. It all works well enough that I haven't questioned why the radio stations assume that only overseas listeners and urban dwellers would want to hear them over internet. -- Tim Prince
