[opensuse] suspend doesn't work
Hi guys, Running opensuse Leap 42.1 with Plasma 5.6 on my new Dell XPS 13 9350. It has been running fine, but it has one small problem that just started recently. It won't suspend to ram. If I go to a console and as root type in systemctl suspend, it powers off immediately. Any idea on what is going on here? Besides that, no other funny behavior. I don't know what technical information to post here to make it easier to troubleshoot - let me know, I will post it. -- George Box: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | 32GB Laptop #1: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | Core i7-4710HQ | 64 | 16GB Laptop #2: 42.1 | Gnome new | Core i5?? | 64 | 8GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

What do you do that it should suspend, that it doesn't? Close the lid? menu entry? - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Did you miss that part Carlos? Seems pretty clear to me.

Step 1) Log in as root in a console Step 2) type the command: systemctl suspend Step 3) press enter Step 4) Observer your machine quickly suspend to ram if working correctly OR abruptly power off is not working correctly. Check your power light on most machines. If it flashes it is suspended properly. Step 5) Tap Power on. Machine will resume exactly where it left off if working correctly OR machine will reboot if not working correctly. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done.

Ah. I see, it powers off completely instead of suspending. Thank you. :-) Would it be hibernating instead, perhaps? In that case, on power on it would restore. I would test if hibernate works. Sometimes suspend doesn't, yet hibernate does. It looks like the problem fixed itself somehow. I don't know how. I had tested it several times, and did a normal reboot and tested it, and suspend just wasn't working. It would power off, not suspend, and I would have to push the power button and go through grub to come back on. But now, without explanation, it seems to work like it's supposed to. I will email again if the problem resurfaces. -- George Box: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | AMD Phenom IIX4 | 64 | 32GB Laptop #1: 42.1 | KDE Plasma 5 | Core i7-4710HQ | 64 | 16GB Laptop #2: 42.1 | Gnome new | Core i5?? | 64 | 8GB -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

- -- Yes, sorry. Normally I close the lid - that is how I figured out that it was the suspend function that wasn't working. I close the lid, and it should suspend, but it just turns off. So when I go to open the lid, I have to reboot. So to test it, I typed systemctl suspend, and the machine turned off.

systemctl suspend is very very fast. (so is lid close). Make sure you are not mistaking this for an instant shutdown. Also, as reported on prior threads a month, or so ago, remove the package pm-utils if it is installed. Its obsolete, unmaintained, and deprecated, yet systemd will try to use it if it is installed.
