Ripping CDs to Ogg Vorbis
Can anyone suggest a good tool to rip CDs to Ogg Vorbis? I'm currently using Grip to rip to MP3 and would like to try Ogg, but Grip seems only to convert to mp3 even if I use the Ogg option in Grip. SuSE rpm version preferred! If you tell Grip to use oggenc (in the vorbis-tools package in the SuSE distro) to do the encoding, you'll be sorted. -- James Ogley, Webmaster, Rubber Turnip james@rubberturnip.org.uk http://www.rubberturnip.org.uk Jabber: riggwelter@myjabber.net Using Free Software since 1994, running GNU/Linux (SuSE 8.1) GNOME updates for SuSE: http://www.usr-local-bin.org

Hmmm. I had tried that, but I've worked out the problem - you also need to change the filnaming so that it's .ogg not .mp3! Simply changing to the ogg encoder leaves the filename template (and hence MIME type) as mp3, confusing xmms so that I thought it was failing :-( Anyhow, thanks for the help! Have you tried using Konqueror? Just use audiocd:/, and go into the Ogg Vorbis directory. Grab the files, copy to another directory, and: voila! Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

Thanks to the couple of people who suggested this, but I use Gnome and I *really* dislike Konqueror :-) I've now got Grip encoding Oggs (see other posting) so I'm happy! Convert CD to wavs with cdparanoia. Convert wavs to ogg with oggenc. *************************************************** Powered by SuSE Linux 8.0 Professional KDE 3.0.0 KMail 1.4 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S.
