[opensuse] Connecting two computers with the same IP
Hi all, I would like to move data between two computers. One is a box running oS 12.2 and is connected to a router via cable. The other computer (netbook with oS 12.1 or android ICS tablet) connects to the same router via wifi. Asking whatismyip in a browser gives the same result, so setting up and ftp connection based on IP is not possible. So how can I share data between the machines? I mean without connecting them with a cord. Thanks and best regards, Albert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

whatismyip will return your WAN address which is owned by the router. Each of your clients using the router will have its own LAN address. There are many ways to share data on a LAN. Probably the most common is samba/cifs; which uses a share name like Windows. If you want to use ftp, you can use the LAN address. Or you can set up NFS, too. Or there are programs like rsync. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That server shows both computers have the same IP address because your router/firewall is using something called Network Address Translation, which allows multiple devices to share one public address. However, there is also an address range on your local network that is used by your devices. It will often start with 192.168. Open a command prompt and issue the command /sbin/ifconfig to see the address on your computer. There are Android utilities that show the IP address of an Android device. However, that netbook should get the same address with either Linux or Android running. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Both computers have the same *external* address, outside your router, but not the same within your *local* network inside your router. You can see which local address each computer has by: as root ifconfig |grep inet\ addr\: will return something like: inet addr:192.168.1.10 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 where 192.168.1.10 is the address of that computer as assigned by your router, or as you told your router to assign. to access this box from the *other* computer, ssh -Y <user>@192.168.1.10 or use dolphin and smb://<user>@192.168.1.10 -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

to access this box from the *other* computer, ssh -Y <user>@192.168.1.10
or use dolphin and smb://<user>@192.168.1.10
Hi all, Thank you for the tips. I learned again something. But unfortunately it does not wotk yet. I am trying with the two oS machines, got the two 192.168.X.X addresses, but did not manage to connect. Tied with ssh and samba. The command returns with connection timeout. Something else should also be enabled or installed? Regards, Albert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You need to have either an ssh server activated and the corresponding port opened in the firewall or to use rsync. -- Bogdan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks, it works fine now. Just had to allow it in the firewall. Regards, Albert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Have you enabled the servers? Also, try pinging the addresses, to make sure you can reach the computer. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, I still have problems. Pinging from the fix device toward the mobile one is rather delayed, The answer comes back 3-4 sec later And in dolphin samba does not work. The other direction has 1 ms times. Enabled samba server and client in the firewall. Typing smb:/user@192.168.x.x immediately gives connection timeout. You have slow wireless ?? or other probs. Quick fix: plug remote box into router with cat5/6 cable, chk new address. Do your file tranfers and unplug. But other probs: Did you enable samba service? systemctl start smb.service systemctl status smb.service -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I think samba is running: smb.service - LSB: Samba SMB/CIFS file and print server Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/smb) Active: active (running) since Sun, 03 Feb 2013 15:32:30 +0100; 1h 53min ago CGroup: name=systemd:/system/smb.service ├ 1592 /usr/sbin/smbd -D -s /etc/samba/smb.conf └ 1850 /usr/sbin/smbd -D -s /etc/samba/smb.conf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Enable samba ports and enable SMB broadcasting in a YaST Firewall. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
