[opensuse] ATI GPU support, how is it now?

What is your definition of Linux support? What are you planning to do wit the computer that has the ATI card? Generally speaking, the open source drivers for ATI are good. The binary blob drivers are OK too. The number one gotcha that I always see is with people who want to play games in Wine or Crossover.... there, it's a whole world of pain. If you are just planning on regular desktop use, then the video card you go with is much less of an issue. I use openSUSE on machines with nVidia, ATI and Intel video, and it's fine on all 3.... for regular desktop stuff. C. THere are a couple of games I'd like to run in Crossover, but not much. I also use Second Life sometimes and from what I understand the OpenGL for ATI/AMD sucks.

Well, what I can say about ATI is... my experience with the cards has not been.... happy. Pretty much any ATI card will work fine as a desktop card, and the open source drivers are quite good there... but... throw a game on your computer via Crossover and things don't go so well. If there are specific games you do want to play via Crossover or Wine, make sure you check the game database first. If there is a problem with a particular game that is not .NET related, you can almost count on it being ATI related. The poor guys on Macs really struggle since ATI is very common on those machines... so you will often see the ATI video card horrors being discussed amongst the Mac users. The advice I give everyone is... if you expect to play any games in Wine/Crossover, then buy a nVidia card. If you don't plan on gaming, then buy a the computer you like. There is a reason though that hardware vendors like System76 sell laptops with Nvidia Mobile GPUs and not ATI.....
