Hello SuSE People, Running 9.2 on a Athlon 64 bit. Two days ago I did an upgrade of KDE to 3.3.2a via apt. Broke my system sounds. ( Like the little noises) Audio CD's play and in Control Center, Sound System, test sound works. In Control Center, System Sounds, Play a Sound does not work. Did some googling on the KDE list and came up with the following. People there seem to think that arts-1.3.2-3 is broken. (that was installed with the new KDE upgrade) Something to with .ogg files. Then I checked in Yast and found the original 9.2 package was arts-1.3.0-11 (system sounds worked with that one) Question is: Can I go back to 1.3.0-11 or will I be running into dependency hell. And if so how do I go about it. (--oldpackage ? ) Maybe that isn't even the problem but is the best guess I can come up with. I remember I had this same problem way back in 8.0 but darned if I can remember what fixed it. Bob S.

They are correct.

I wouldn't go back that far. 1.3.1-3 works for me here. Check a kde mirror for kde 3.3.1 x86_64
And if so how do I go about it. (--oldpackage ? )
rpm -Uvh --oldpackage <name of rpm>. I had the same problem, and am now using the 1.3.1 with kde 3.3.2a with system sounds working. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

OT - I used to like system sounds, then I found everyone in the offices kept looking around every time the darn thing went off, also when on the phone at home, people kept asking "What's THAT?", so it can be a nuisance. The only one I haven't disabled is the one on the laptop that makes a sound of breaking glass when you get certain things wrong. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Sid, Not a problem here. Just go into my study where the computer is and shut the door. Otherwise my wife yells "What's all that noise ???" :-) Hmmmmmm, :breaking glass" gotta find that one. Bob S.

Thanks Joe, Will try that and let the list know. BTW - Love your 64bit xine. Works great, Bob S. PS Did you get a chance to fix Ace ?
B. Stia wrote:

FYI, I have rebuilt the arts rpm for x86_64 and it should soon be available via apt soon. It works.

I just rebuilt the package, credit should go to the xine developers and to packman, which are now providing x86_64 packages as well.

It is beyond me. I am not a programmer. Its author will need to fix it. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

Joe, Thanks so much. That did it. Guess I will have to "pin" that in apt now, right? Anyway, what a great list of people ! Hope someday I will be able to contribute as much as I get. If I ever do, it will be because of you guys. Bob S.

Bob, You should have checked the mail list archives, you would have found this item covered already. It seems that the new arts is broken and a simple recompile of the SuSE's src.rpm on your system will cure all ills! Worked for several of us on the list here already. regards, Lee

-----------Snip------------------ Actually re-compiling didn't work for me, from suse source rpm or arts download site. Just alot of time spent followed by error messages and incomplete builds. The messages about reverting to previous rpms finally got me interested enough to find a site that I could grab the 3.3.1 rpms from (unfortunately I had just recently emptied my /var/cache/apt/archive directory). Works now, when the next upgrade comes out I'll try it, enough time wasted on this version See ya -- dh Don't shop at ZipZoomFly.com!

David, It certainly sounds like you may have additional problems to work with then, if the compile had so many problems. I'll be happy to pass along what I compiled, if you want to try them, just contact me off list. Not sure these will work either on your system, since the problems you experienced earlier. regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.7.2 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.2 --- Registered Linux User #225206 "Don't let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game!"

Thanks for the offer, Although I didn't keep notes I believe all of my compilation errors/RPM rebuild failures centered around a problem with libmas. I've got mas and mas-devel installed and even re-installed them thinking something could have gone amiss. Anyway thanks for the help. -- dh Don't shop at ZipZoomFly.com!
