Re: [SLE] where to find these packages? Novell website said they are part of 10.0 but not on my discs

Addendum to All, I am alternating between 10.0 and 10.1 discussions and getting thoroughly confused in the process. :-) The retail equivalent of 10.0 cannot be downloaded from the net, we all agree. But Zhang Weiwu asked about OSS packages that apparently aren't included on the 5 CD images... but they /are/ available on the DVD. They are also available at the OSS ftp installation sources provided by you, Ken and others. Unfortunately, I'd lost my text "snippet" containing the links. So, thanks for bringing both me and Zhang Weiwu up to speed! Carl

Then what is in ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra? It looks to be all the non-OSS stuff, including Sun java. All very confusing, really -- with apparently 3 repositories needed just to get the equivalent of the boxed set (and that still doesn't get you far -- Packman at least is still needed), far too confusing. 10.1 is a little better; it has a GM-extra directory also at suse.com, but it looks to be unnecessary. All of this now seems to be in the inst-source-extra repository on the opensuse mirrors. Packman still needed, though.

Just so this thread can be capped off on a successful note. I count the following on-line *non CD/DVD image* 10.0 sources: Packman and Guru: http://packman.rsync.zmi.at/suse/10.0 http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.0/ Base Distribution: ftp://{mirror}/pub/suse/i386/10.0/inst-source-extra ftp://{mirror}/pub/suse/i386/10.0/SUSE-Linux10.0-GM-Extra ftp://{mirror}/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source ftp://{mirror}/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java Supplementary (not "official" or "supported") KDE: ftp://{mirror}/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_10.0/yast-source
10.1 is a little better; it has a GM-extra directory also at suse.com, but it looks to be unnecessary. All of this now seems to be in the inst-source-extra repository on the opensuse mirrors. Packman still needed, though.
And the online *non CD/DVD .iso image* 10.1 sources are: **Not available** This was the point where I confused the sources for the two releases when answering Zhang Weiwu's original question. For 10.1, you must download the 'GM' CD1 through CD5 plus the 'GM-Addon-Biarch' images (.iso files,) and either burn them directly to CDs or use makeSUSEdvd. makeSUSEdvd converts the CDs into a local installation source on hard disk that can also be used to burn an installation DVD. Once you've installed 10.1, you can add the following optional installation sources in YaST: Bug fixes and security patches: ftp://{mirror}/pub/suse/i386/update/10.1 Packman and Guru: http://packman.iu-bremen.de/suse/10.1 ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/10.1 Supplementary KDE (not "official" or "supported") ftp://{mirror}/suse/i386/supplementary/KDE/update_for_10.1/yast-source There! Now did I miss anything? :-) Carl

Looks like you got everything else. Maybe for 10.2 they'll just put all the installation repository (OSS and non-OSS) into one directory tree on the mirrors (he says, hoping and crossing fingers and looking at Marcus :-) ) Oh, and maybe the update repository on opensuse as well as suse.com. There, now I think we're done :-)

What is confusing? If you used M$ you would have to use far more places to gather the software provided by 3-4 SUSE repos. packman will always be needed until the lawmakers stop taking bribes (oops, they call them donations). -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

The main repositories are on opensuse.org and its mirrors (and of course, Packman :-) ), and maybe also suse.com is needed, while the updates are on suse.com. Not including the updates, there are 3 or 4 repositories needed, when one should suffice (combine all the non-OSS and OSS sources on the opensuse mirrors, in one repository). If there was no confusion, we wouldn't keep seeing the sort of questions the OP asked. You are of course correct that what <the company in Redmond> does is far more complicated (they must have taken lessons from IBM's OS/2 stuff), but what they do isn't of much concern to me ;-) center around class-action lawsuits against the RIAA and its members. There is also: or until some judge subpoenas all of a company's computers, because otherwise the DRM-protected email evidence it holds can't even be read, much less entered into the court records. Wouldn't that put a crimp in Billy's style? :-D

Couldn't we have someone knowledgeable to put together an entry into the FAQ (?wiki site so that we don't have to go thru this everytime? I for one am absolutely confused about what I have to or not to download to get the wholesheebang working. OK, I now think that what Carl provided as list/source of files I can now set the Updated correctly but when it comes to getting the next issue of SuSE it all be confusion again. (Why do things have to be made so bloody confusing for people?! Why not just one directory where one can go to and download everything that's there to have a fully functioning OS? But that would be too sensible, wouldn't it?)

There must be at least the split off between OSS and non-OSS software to seperate them. Ciao, Marcus
I swear, I have followed the instructions exactly, a few times, and I am still subscribed. I can't find any place on the web site that indicates how I can contact somebody for help. Can anybody help me unsubscribe? I subscribed with two email addresses (mine and an old one) and I did follow these instructions: Write an empty e-mail to <LISTNAME>-unsubscribe@suse.com e.g. suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com Attention: This only works if the "FROM" address in your mailer and the address with which you are subscribed on the mailinglist are identical! If your "FROM" address and the subscription address differ, please indicate your subscription address as follows: <LISTNAME>-unsubscribe-<YOUR ADDRESS>@suse.com replacing the "@" character in your address with "=" as in the example below: suse-linux-e-unsubscribe-me=mydomain.com@suse.com I emailed empty emails to: suse-linux-e-unsubscribe-jimkk=umich.edu@suse.com (for my old address) and suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com (for my current address) but I still get two copies of everything. I've done this a couple times over the last couple days. If anybody can tell me what to do next, I would really, really appreciate it. Thanks, Jim

OK, tell me where on www.novell.com can I find the entry to the above? In fact, where does it even mention that 10.1 is available for download? I probably missed it all but I don't have the time to go wading thru a labyrinth looking for something which ought to be obvious to a newbie.

The 'discussion' is about the ability to DOWNLOAD the ISOs and not pre-ordering 10.1. I cannot see anywhere that it states on the Novell home page that 10.1 is now available for downloading - not even the great PR machine mentions anything about this in the blurb on the sidepanel (RH). Actually clicking on the frontpage "SUSE Linux" should bring you to the right page, but currently it leads to the Linux startpage. You can click there on "SUSE Linux 10.0" and will get there. 10.1 is listed as for preorder. For download you should follow the opensuse.org links ;) Ciao, Marcus

I noticed it says the purchased version includes Realplayer 10.0.6, which is not included with OpenSUSE. They're right. OpenSUSE includeds Realplayer 10.0.7.785. ;-)

Agreed. It is rare for other members to be able to unsubscribe a fellow list member on any mailing list. If we could do that then it would be possible to unsubscribe anybody at the drop of a hat or a wrongly spoken word. You'll only be able to do it using your own e-mail address or through the list admin.
