Could you define the problem a bit more? 1) You can't connect to your ISP with a dialup modem 2) You can connect but your email doesn't work. 3) You can connect and use the web but email doesn't work. What is dialup email?

No connection what so ever. No web no dialup using evolution.
No useful error messages all are as cryptic as winblows.
www.access-4-free.com directions for RH only.
1) Is dialup possible in 8.2pro?
it was in 7.3 personal web not email
2) what third party site has the instructions?
I find nothing useful on suse.com nor in the installed directions
which were followed to the letter.
3) what programs are missing no messages direct me to a solution?
4) what configuration files need direct hacking to enable email?
5) does 90 solve these problems?
6) has anyone here ever made dialup email work by any hack, trick or
recompilation?
(no dvd drive so no sources)
At this point I am left with total reinstall and installing everything
included on all disks in blind hope of finding the undocumented answer.

Wow... I am the one who asked for clarification and I STILL can't tell what your real problem is. DOES your MODEM CONNECT TO YOUR ISP??? Can you PING your ISP? The answer to those two questions would go a long way to solving your problem. (and I still don't know what you mean by 'dialup email'. Dialup is a totally different issue than email.

1) Is dialup possible in 8.2pro? it was in 7.3 personal web not email
Yes, it has always been possible. Demand is actually a function of pppd. Please refer to its manpage.
4) what configuration files need direct hacking to enable email?
For dial on demand go to /etc/network/providers and look for the profile of your isp (if you only have 1 isp, there should only be 1 file there). This file specify the options passed to pppd for that connection and change the demand line to: DEMAND="YES" You should also make sure the smpppd service is running. For more info on smpppd, please refer to its manpage. Charles -- "The move was on to 'Free the Lizard'" -- Jim Hamerly and Tom Paquin (Open Sources, 1999 O'Reilly and Associates)

DEMAND="YES"
Sorry this line should be: DEMAND="yes" Also, I should clarify that this files is used by smpppd for options specific for that connection. The main pppd config file is actually /etc/ppp/options. Charles -- "sic transit discus mundi" (From the System Administrator's Guide, by Lars Wirzenius)

yes, if you look back thru the archives you will see several folks who attempted, and one who succeeded in getting it working for my kid.. Yes, I use dialup via an external modem on ttyS0 to surf and collect email (SuSE 8.2 pro). I use KPPP to connect.
2) what third party site has the instructions? I find nothing useful on suse.com nor in the installed directions which were followed to the letter.
KPPP has an extensive help page which helped me through my setup problems.

Here is your problem (I think), your mail program cannot find the smtp and mail servers. There appears to be a problem either with your DNS setup ( should be configured automatically on connection to point at your ISP's DNS servers ) or possibly your routing. Your default route entry was 'blank', which might be alright if it is configured automatically (default action normally). This might or might not help - I'm not an expert I'm afraid.
