(SuSE 9.1, Gnome 2.4, grip 3.1.4) I was happily ripping some CDs. I inserted the next one and grip failed to recognize it as an audio CD. Thinking I had a bad CD, I tried the next one in sequence with the same results. Hardware problem, right? I tried putting the "bad" CDs into another system, using grip, with the same results. I tried playing the CDs. The system did not even recognize they were there. Tried playing the CDs on a (for shame) MS Windows system. MS Media Player picked them right up and played them for me. Now I'm thoroughly confused. Barring some probability 10E-64 coincidence, I've eliminated all the usual suspects. Any pointers or suggestions will be happily accepted with my thanks. -- Donald D. Hello Donald: I don't know if this will help or not but I'm running SuSE 9.1 in 64-bit mode. I had a problem with the CD not playing - the counter on the Kscd worked but no sound. Seems there was a conflict between Kscd and another program than manages the 'volume' control. Details are at SuSE support database under mute audio card Also, as to copying CDs, K3D seems to be able to do a complete disk-to-disk copy (either data or audio) but I can't seem to create my own music menu from other sources ( CDs, MP3s, etc) so that K3D would burn the selected menu items. I haven't done a lot with this so the cure might already be out there. As I said, not sure if any of this helps but updating my system seems to have cured the mute audio card problem. Cheers and good luck Mike On Monday 19 July 2004 10:32, Donald D Henson wrote:

Thanks for the advice but my problem seems to have been mainly operator headspace, although not entirely. One of the things I discovered was that the master volume control was set to minimum and muted. Changing that gave me sound back. Then I discovered that the grip configuration had changed: My ripper had changed from "cdparanoia" to "grip (cdparanoia)". Changed that back. Then I discovered that the command for the lame encoder had changed from "/usr/bin/lame" to just "lame". Changed that back also. Tried to rip another CD and it looked like it was going to work okay but around track 15 or so, the rip rate slowly went to zero. This is where I think the other problems occurred earlier because I had some difficulty in stopping grip at this point. Anyway, my original problem is solved but I guess I now have another one. That calls for a new thread of course. -- Donald D. Henson, Managing Director West El Paso Information Network The Non-Aggression Principle Rules
