[SLE] Hardware install Questions....
Hi All & help, I have three devices off my ide channels so far & am about to add a fourth, viz HP-CD-Writer Plus 91001 :-) But I am wondering which channel to put it on? My six gig Fugitsu is udma 33 as is my cd-rom (44x). My two point 5 gig Fugitsu is a mode four thing. A geek friend down here said that if I wanna to direct cd-to-cd burning, then both the cd's would need to be on the same channel. Is this so? Because if I do this, I loose the "speed" of the faster Fugitsu.... So, is it ok too keep both the six gig Fugitsu & my cd-rom (44x) on the same channel & would I still be able to do direct cd-to-cd burning? Please help, as I have bits all over the place & I wanna idea of the best way to put em all back together again-with apologies to that chap who fell of the wall..... :-) *BFN* Greek Geek :-) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I think it will work OK BUT- I have had bad luck doing "on the fly" copied of cd's. As I understand it any error on the read of the cd will be written to the burn cd. A better approach is to make an image on your hard drive and burn from that. Any read errors can then be re-read by the read cd to insure a good image. This does take longer and requires upwards of 700 meg free space on a drive. I have found the trade-off to be worth it. Hi All & help,
I have three devices off my ide channels so far & am about to add a fourth, viz HP-CD-Writer Plus 91001 :-)
But I am wondering which channel to put it on?
My six gig Fugitsu is udma 33 as is my cd-rom (44x).
My two point 5 gig Fugitsu is a mode four thing.

The way I understand it, is that only 1 IDE device can be "active" at a time. If you say have a hard drive on primary master, and CD-ROM drive on secondary master, when you are acessing the CD-ROM drive, the hard drive has to "wait" for the CD-ROM to become inactive before it can do anything. The way (atleast how I understand it) IDE works, is that it quickly "switches" back and forth before the primary and secondary devices if they both need to send or receive data though the channel. Only 1 device can be active on the bus at any given time. It can quickly switch between devices so it "appears" they are both working at the same time. I would recommened you put the CD-ROM reader and the CD-R on differant channels, so that they both can be active at the same time. This is the way I recall it, you might want to pick up a book called "Upgrading and Repair PCs 11th edition", it is a couple thousand pages and has an entire chapter on IDE devices. You should probably get another opinion on this before you try it though.
So, is it ok too keep both the six gig Fugitsu & my cd-rom (44x) on the same channel & would I still be able to do direct cd-to-cd burning?
If you got about a 700 megs free on a part, you can rip to hard drive, the burn directly from hard drive, it only takes probably an extra 10 minutes, but that 10 minutes can save you from a cup holder.

Check out that book, it has almost anything you would want to know about PC hardware, every so offened the author releases a new edition to keep up with the hardware market. He is up to 11 or 12 now, and it is a really good book, and deals with the actucally hardware, and how the hardware works, and doesn't really get into software or OS details, but keeps it netural.

?? Not famalir with that one yet

Hi All, & thank you for the feed back about how to set up two cdromz. I got hung up on the AT vs ATX power thing for a bit (couple of days....), but all the hardware is almost on talking terms now. Len'z or Phillip, when will the "evaluation" version of 6.4 be available with iso image? I wanna test my cd burner & my isp's patience.... ;-) *BFN* Greek Geek :-) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
