Remote install of SuSE 8.2 Pro over a network?
Hi. I have an old HP Omnibook 900 with a mere 64 Megs of RAM. It's missing both the floppy and cd-rom. I do have a ZIP drive, but, it's not bootable from it . Some time back, I did buy and install a new HD. The HD is blank. Because of the low RAM and processing power, I don't think it'll take SuSE10.0. But, I do have an old copy of SuSE 8.2 Pro here. this might be a dumb question... but, here goes... Using a SuSE 10.0 Boxed Ed. box, could I use a crossover Ethernet cable to load SuSE 8.2 Pro on the Omnibook? Thanks, -Joe G.

I installed SUSE 10.0 on my ancient Toshiba CDT320 - 233MHZ with 64M RAM. I even installed it over the network - though it took some fiddling. /Per Jessen, Zürich (2.12 °C) -- http://www.spamchek.com/ - managed anti-spam and anti-virus solution. Interesting! Do you KDE, Enlightenment, Gnome, or do you have a text-based machine? Thanks, -Joe

It may be able to, but if you want to use 8.2 by all means go ahead. I keep a copy here too. It was a great OS. However, there are no longer any security updates to it, so REALLY make sure you lock it down, and for sure don't put it on the internet without a hardware firewall in front of it. You're asking to install from a LAN so you probably have a Router or something, and most come with a firewall, so at the least don't put it in the DMZ, or on the net without something in front of it. Heh, I have screen shots of my 8.2 running for 66 days without a reboot. Great OS :)

I have 9.3 Professional on this box which is a Pentium 3 733 with 384 RAM and it uses KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment, Window Maker and text / init 3 lol.
Thanks, -Joe

It's not KDE, but one of the less memory-hungry window-managers - but I do use text-mode 99% of the time. /Per Jessen, Zürich (1.62 °C) -- http://www.spamchek.com/ - managed anti-spam and anti-virus solution. Let us analyse your spam- and virus-threat - up to 2 months for free.
