Has anyone out there had problems setting up a cable modem before? I thought that it would be pretty simple, just set it up to handle DHCP and away you go. No such luck. I am on Charter Communications cable system, if that helps. My modem is an RCA and I am running 7.0. I have 2 NIC cards and both are in there and working fine. I have the modem running in windows. I am also pretty new to all of this, so if you have any words of wisdom, make them pretty low-level. Thanks, Doug

Are you sure both NIC are recognized (see dmesg, or lspci if both are PCI NIC's)? Does the dhcp client uses the right NIC ? I don't know for SuSE 7.0, but older versions of SuSE used a dhcp client called "DHCLIENT", who was sometimes capricious. If this is the case, you could try another client called "dhcpcd", easily found on Freshmeat or google... I am responding to this at work and my machine is at home. I am sure that I have both NICs working as I had an intranet running and was able to ping all three (one was a windows IP) addresses. As far as the log files, I have not checked those. As far as DHCLIENT, I have that set up now and before that I had the DHCPD running, neither worked for me. I know that there is something small that I am doing wrong.

As appears below, I think your problem is not clear. What exactly fails?
Does 'ifconfig' show logic IP's on your NIC's? (say, a private or public on
the one to the cable modem, and a private on the one on your lan).
Can you access Internet from the PC with the two NIC's? (say, 'ping
www.suse.com').
Can you access Internet from a PC in your lan?
Is the PC configured as router? (there are a few other things in the kernel
configuration)
There are two or three other things to consider. Perhaps the most elementary
one fails: DHCP on the NIC phisically to the cable modem (say eth0), and a
private IP (your lan) on the other (eth1). In doubt, you can try 'ifconfig
eth1 down' and ping outwards.
BTW, your cable modem is supposed to be external.
